well, thats what im hearing when im driving now. i thought maybe it was bearings, but i lifted both the front end and the ass, and all the tires move freely with no noise. i shook the hell out of the u joint and it doesnt seem to have a lot of play. is there another way to check it? or is this noise something else completely?

no, i dont think!!! i just puther in and she purrs. my buddy on the phone said maybe the u joint, but i cant really tell. it sounds like a heavy metal clanking

did you just say that you lifted the truck ?
check your clearences on your front driveshaft with
either your cross member or exhaust.
does it do it all the time or just when you hits bumps ?

i didnt lift it yet, i have rebuilt 3/4 tons in the garage witht the lift and 35's, so if an axle is really screwed, i have an out. but i just pu the motor in and just wanted to drive her for a while first. im stumped

Do you have a part time t-case? If so maybe you could pull the rear shaft out and drive it with the front only..try to narrow it down and vice versa. MAybe be have a friend walk next to you to see if they can tell what end of the truck it's coming from

jack up all 4 and throw it in 4 and let iot run listen for the noise /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

A worn case in my vans 10 bolt rear end made that kind of noise, mostly when coasting around corners--the side gear ate the diff housing and egged it out so the axle and side gear could slop around some.I thought it was u-joints when I first heard it in nashville on vacation in 92 so I bought new u-joints so I'd have them if one failed on the way home-never changed them for nearly 2 years(didnt use the van that much)but after I did,the noise didnt go away--it soon got worse--so I bought another complete rear end.No noise now!. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Hope its an easy fix for you. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
