That is a rare shifter.
I have seen one before but I didn't know how it worked.
You be lucky if somebody else chimes in and tell more about it.

I was wondering why he had a bat the whole time. I'd buy one if I was in the market for a shifter just for his attitude.

I think he did that to show no matter how hard you "hit it", the shifter won't over shift.
