My front driveshaft came apart at the CV joint and killed my tranny today:mad: It not only smashed the pan, but bashed in the side of the transmission too, so I gotta get a new tranny. Anyone else have this happen?:ears: I'm thinking if this is a somewhat common problem, then maybe I should fab up a driveshaft hoop, but if it's just a bit of bad luck, then just replace the tranny a move on.:dunno:

Buddy of mine basicly took a length of strap like an inch wide maybe a foot long, made a hoop, ran a bolt through the ends and bolted it to his frame. Worked great the many times he has blown a front shaft. Seems like a simple easy mod.

common??...

It does not happen often, but is entirely possible!...I have witnessed similar destruction while plowing parking lots..a guy with a K30 had a front spring shear its center bolt due to loose u-bolts one snowy day....the front axle moved back about 6" when the tire hit a cement "stop" (the thing your tires hit when you park so you wont go too far and hit a wall,etc)...

The front driveshaft pushed the transfer case back hard enough to crack the adapter to the tranny, and it tore out the part of the tranny where the 4 bolts held the T-case to it (he was running a TH350/NP205 at the time)..it also folded the driveshaft up like a pretzel, bent the rear shaft too--and the transfer case just about dropped to the pavement!:eek1: ---needless to say,his plowing was brought to a complete and sudden stop!...to add to his woes, one of the leaves in the front spring speared his tires sidewall..:doah:

...the T-case survived, but he had to get another tranny ,adapter, driveshaft, and fix the spring..he parked it until spring and used another truck, rather than fix it in the cold weather..I think a loop isn't a bad idea..even a failed u-joint can let a driveshaft flail around, and do NASTY damage to anything in its path!..I've seen floors torn out of cars that lost a rear U joint during a burnout!..

oh jeez..... So is it just a loop? or like a length or strapping, with a "circle" in the center? If I do it, I want to do it right.

what a horrible friggin day.

think a driveshaft has much of a chance bashin in an sm465?

Ive also seen a guys driveshaft push back on the transfercase, the thing was too long and when he flexed it the driveshaft bottomed out and pushed back, just broke the adapter though.

Sorry Paul
nonpaying members cant post pics
but it cracked the case from the side all the way over the top in the back.:doah:

Thanks for hosting the pics Seafarer76.:thumb:
Now you can see why I'm worried about this happening again,:eek1: and thinking about a hoop.
I'm starting to feel like I'm in the special olympics. I not winning the race, but I dont have enough sense to give up either.

It looks like if you did make a hoop that mounted to the frame rail it would keep the shaft away from the tranny and tcase and it would be fine. Also if it is mounted back by the CV it would provide the most protection for the tranny and yet not impact the travel of the shaft during flex.
