I just picked up this 87 blazer and there is a weird knocking noise coming from the bellhousing/ starter area. As soon as you rev the engine it goes away. Any thoughts? Auto trans

cracked flex plate, loose converter bolts, bent dust shield... pull the dust shield and take a peak...

I agree with what everyone has posted so far. I just changed my flex plate cause it was cracked near the bolts on the engine side (not on the torque converter). Hopefully its just a loose bolt on the flex plate but I would guess its cracked....with mine the noise appeared to go away at higher rpms.

Good luck!

Im hoping to get some time tomorrow to powerwash the frame and stuff. Then I will remover the sheild and grab a flashlight to take a look. Im hoping its a simple fix. Whats the easiest way to swap a flexplate? unbolt tranny and slide back?

I would guess cracked flexplate. You can slide the trans back a couple inches and get it done pretty easy. I did the one in my Burb last year.

If it goes away when you rev it, then it's most likely cracked flexplate, if it doesn't completely go away it could be lose bolts.
I have had both cases, and one time a bolt was so lose it was hitting the engine block so the noise wasn't going away with revving the engine, it got worse.:doah:
And yes, I unbolt the tranny slide back a couple of inches and take it out and change it.

Talk about brain dead. I do not know the difference from a crank shaft and flywheel.

Need to stop putting parts on eBay while cruising CK5.

No worries dude, I actually posted that cause I thought I said flywheel, then realized I didn't. Lol. I knew what you were tryin to say. I'll check it out tomorrow if it's not raining. Will report back with findings

I vote cracked flexplate, common issue with GM. If it turns out to be the problem I would suggest you buy an SFI approved flexplate from Summit Racing or Jegs as they are thicker than stock and hold up alot better.

Pulled the inspection cover and ring gear looks good, all bolts are tight. Guess im just goin to run her and see what happens.

The flexplate cracks very close to the flexplate bolts where it bolts to the crank and it is nearly impossible to see without pulling the trans.

oh I see. So basically i run it until it gets worse? Then pull the trans and fix it

Sure.

Why wait until it is completely useless and then the engine can't start and or the vehicle won't move because all the engine does is spin where the crack is rather than transfer the energy through the transmission.

And that is if it happens when cranking it up......
Don't forget, if it finishes cracking at speed, bad things can happen........

Remove the dust/inspection cover off and get a flashlight up in there...you may have to rotate the flex plate by hand but you should be able to see if its cracked.

Me personally, I wouldnt wait till it gets worse, could cause secondary damage to tranny or engine with pieces thrown around.
