Well my SBC 350 is making a knocking noise. I believe it is coming from the motor:o but if you put your ear on the fender you can hear like a rattle.

I tried adjusting the timing and when advancing the knocking would go w/ the RPM's and then it would soon turn into a whistling noise  until I retarded it, then it would go back to knocking. :eek1:

I do not know what this could be be:doah: , any help would be appreciated

Thanks:bow:

its a looooooooooooooong shot

my old 86 would run like crap and had a hell of a whisle noise...

turned out to be a bad carb gasket..considering how long I drove it with thatembarassing sound....my sister called it the whistle truck:D

Yeah that's why I don't get it, it runs great but it just makes those noises I can't figure it out. Its not the carb gasket, because I just recently replaced those and put on a spacer.

I don't know what it is???

did it whistle before you replaced it?

since you now have a spacer you have two gaskets that could do this:D

do you have good vaccume pressure from your manifold?

the guage should be real cheap and just hook it to your line off the manifold.

I may be way off here??

Might be some kind of vacuum leak?
Try spraying everything with carb cleaner, when it's running. When the engine runs rough that's your problem.

I'd have to check that, I've never used a vacuum so I don't even know which line to hook it to, would it be the one going to the distributor???and what kind of readings should I get???

Ok well I've got it narrowed down to it only starts to knock after the car has warmed up, during the warm up when it is cold, no knocking noise???

ok Just did a check by pulling plug wires and none of them stop the knocking. The oil looks perfect, no metal specs or anything and nice and clear, no smoke, just did an oil change about 2 or 3 weeks ago

Ok well its wierd, I just did another check by putting it in gear and it seems as if the knocking goes away.:D I also had it revved up to about 13-1400 RPM's while in gear and holding the brakes and it didn't come back:D , but as soon as it was put back into park, the knocking came back:mad:
I am stumped:confused:

thats not a bad guess!

on my 75 I had one missing and other one backed out..damn it made some racket sounded like rocks moving around in there.

I was going to wonder if the problem was under his valve covers but that would be a rattle and would be consistant and not matte rif it was or was not in gear...

Ok just came out from underneath and the bolts are tight and the plate and converter have no play in them. From what I can see I can't see any cracks unless their small or I missed them.

My next question is isn't there a certain way the converter is supposed to be mounted to the flexplate?

If that was wrong could it cause this noise??
