Know anything about the newer 1500 rear axles?

Since 2014 if you get a V8 in the 1500 Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Yukon you get the 9.5” rear axle and the 9.76” if you get the MaxTow or 6.2.

Only thing is it is now a 12 bolt axle instead of a 14 bolt axle.

Did AAMCo / GM just change the old 14 semifloater into a 12 bolt or is it an entirely new axle?

I think it's a whole new unit...or it would have 14 bolts.

I’ve done more research.

The new 9.5” 33 spline 12 bolt SF is the descendant of the 07ish-13 9.5” 14 bolt SF. The carrier, axleshafts, gears, etc are all the same according to AAM Co. Looks like when they redesigned the housing to accomodate the optional 9.76” gears they changed to 12 bolts on the cover instead of 14.

Also reading that you can use older 14SF lockers in them but you must use the older style carrier.

So, to make clear, this is really a 14bolt semi-floater, just with 12 bolts for the cover?

P.S. Does this also apply to '14 and later suburbans?

i guess my concern is are the axle bearings the same between the 9.5 and 9.76. And are the bearings the same size as any previous 14 bolt semi-float?

Also, are they calling this a 14 bolt rear or a 12 bolt?

Follow my link above. It looks like the only difference is the ring gear is bigger.

They call it a 12 bolt.

So, it seems EVERY suburban/tahoe/yukon 2014 and later gets this new 9.5" axle-----since you can only get a v-8 in these vehicles? (and you get the 9.76" if you get the 6.2 engine?)

This seems to coincide with chevy discontinuing offering a 3/4 ton suburban after 2013...............?

V8 trucks after ‘13 get the 12 bolt 9.5” unless they have MaxTow which gets the 9.76” version.

I’m not sure if the 6.2 trucks automatically get the MaxTow package or most just get ordered that way or the 6.2 automatically comes with the 9.76”.

i've been doing a little digging myself; i need some towing ability. Ideally i'd like to build my own square suburban 3/4 ton, but just don't have time right now. i am aiming for 2013-2017 as these gm certified used/carmax units will need no work and come with warranties.

It's very confusing, but here's what i have so far:

1) You can't get a 6.2 in 2014-18 suburbans/tahoes, so there is no "MaxTow" for these suvs.
a) There is, however, a "max trailer package," or "heavy-duty trailering package" (depending on which year) available for the suburban/tahoe.

b) IF equipped with this "max trailer package/heavy-duty trailering package," The Tahoe actually has a higher tow capacity than suburban: 8500 vs. 8,100 for '14, 8,600 vs. 8,300 for '15 and later. i'm assuming because the Tahoe is lighter?

2) The 2013 3/4 suburban has maximum tow capacity of 9,600 lbs. Now, the 6.0 engine was available for suburban at the time, but since the current 5.3 makes about the same power now, as the 6.0 did in '13, i would like to assume that the higher tow capacity of the 3/4 ton was due to suspension/axle, not engine? At any rate, the newer improved 1/2 tons still don't quite match a 3/4 ton.

If a TRUCK has "MaxTow," then one big clue is if it has tow mirrors. Also, the code "NHT" will appear on the glove box sticker; This is code for the MaxTow package. However, how can you tell if a suburban or Tahoe has the heavy-duty trailer package? Most dealers do not list this on their websites. i don't feel like driving 80-100 miles or more just to find out it's a no-go. i think one possible clue is if it has a trailer hitch installed, but this is not 100% guaranteed as the previous owner may have installed it.

You can get a 6.2 in the '14+ models if you go with an Escalade or Denali. :pimp:

I believe all of the Tahoes/Yukons/Suburbans 14-18 come with hitches standard. They’re part of the rear bumper structure and hidden behind a panel at the bottom of the bumper. Comes off with two wing bolts.
There is a towing package for them though. Gets low range, uprated suspension, and some other towing goodies.

So do these new 12 bolts weigh as much as old 14 bolts? Without the drum brakes of course. Looking to upgrade my square body suburban to modern brakes and maybe stronger axle.

Not sure but it has to be similar. It’s just a 14SF in a different wrapper.
