Koh

Let's do it!

I will be there. My burb will look a lot different though. It will be caged a chopped!

Had a blast. Really needed to blow the Cobb webs out of the jimmy. Spent Sunday to Sunday there. Stayed in hammer town heights. Got the semi stuck, then unstuck. Watched the race at mile 76. No crowds. Desert spead into a low gear canyon.

Met a couple of you guys. Should have met more. Won't be there next year. Been there done that. Crandon is next.

Did not take a single picture. Did tear off the steering box. Going slow.

Should keep me posted if you end up in crandon. I will more than likely be there buddy of mine is building a truck hopefully to be able to run the whole season.

Hey Wade

Saw you at 76, were you trying to tell us our position on course or that the left front was departing the vehicle?

Either way it was cool to see you but my lip reading sucks.

I figured you couldn't hear squat. But yes, something looked wrong. When did it fail?

It was pushing the pads out on the caliper and causing bad brakes before we saw you. I got out and looked but the way it was sitting everything looked fine, just thought we had a master cylinder going away.

Then as we went down the devils slide we could finally hear something was wrong. Turned out we made a two piece spindle on the left front.

Stephen went the two miles to the pit, got the parts and brought them back, I repaired it and off we went, Only to break a rear yoke and loose the driveshaft in the middle of claw hammer on our third lap. First DNF sucks.

But you got to qualify and race. I only got to watch.

Only 11.5 months until the next one.

All true.

I can say that the 3" dia 5 tube bypasses changed a lot of the handling and ride characteristics. We now know that 14b and D 60 spindles can't take the beating. We have been fighting mysterious brake issues late in races that could never be explained. We now think that the spindles were flexing allowing the wheel bearings to loosen up just a tad and allow for some rotor run-out. We use a very nice high end racing caliper setup that uses residual pressure valves to keep the pads on the rotors. When the rotor runs out the smallest amount it pushes the pads back and causes a spongy pedal.

Also I felt like they took the car back to what it used to be for crawling, predictable and nimble for it's size.

IFS in the future. They sure look cool running out there. I designed an IRS front when I did the jimmy. Just could not find anyone who had done it with long travel 8 years ago. Now I would do it.

It's on the table for sure.

Racing is so far from technical rock crawling that IFS is a huge benefit now. When you look at the cost to set up a new front axle vs. IFS the costs aren't too far off.

I figure a good solid axle front end including shocks is near $20,000, A ready to assemble IFS setup is $25,000 to $30,000 from one of the bigger name proven technology companies.

Both can be done cheaper but those prices assume all new components starting from scratch.

So when do I get to come build it?

I saw everyone's rig but Shawn's buggy, but didn't manage to run into any of you guys... I was parked beside your truck, wade, for like 15 minutes one day hoping you'd come back to it :haha:

Oh well, next year we need to make sure we arrange a time and place to meet up ahead of time!

Seems this was the year of broken spindles and unit bearings... We broke 4 unit bearings on the race truck, and I broke a spindle on my Tahoe.

Should have left your number. Just wrote it in the dust on the windshield.
