KOH

So what's the good guy HAM Radio setup to get? Or let's start a thread on it. Haven't seen any discussion on HAM set ups. Just a suggestion.

I looked long and hard at the rugged radio setup and almost bought a system when I was at KOH last year and then I found the BaoFeng. I have meant to do a video on this as they are so awesome. I got two radios, a car mount antenna and programming gear for like $150 or something. I am pretty sure this is what Rugged uses they just add their logo and charge triple.

The programming was super easy with a program called Chirp. I have pretty much every frequency I could want and repeater access via programmable keys

Yep. Get a license first, there are some enormous fines for using HAM without one. Mind you, same with commercial VHF, but that doesn't stop almost everyone at KOH for using it anyways lol

I use Yaesu radios primarily. I have an 857D in Penny and an 8800R in my pickup. I have a Kenwood TM-D710G for the Escalade but haven't installed it yet.

The 857D is my favourite radio.

you need a license to transmit but not to listen. It is a great idea to get a license so you actually know what is going on, but just for kicking around at KOH listening to team traffic etc you don't need to spend a bunch.

Great! Thanks for the info. Anybody else got anything about HAM stuff please post up for us novices in this area. How or where do you need to licence up?

Ok so we're gonna try and be out there at least Friday.. I'll hunt you guys down somehow.
