I have found a need to carry some stuff on the top of my suburban. Some of it heavy.

The factory roof rack is severely lacking.

I do not want a off road style roof rack.
I want something low to the ground that can be changed if I need it too.

Been thinking about using an L track system.

Anyone ever seen it done?

I never even thought of using thee, but now that you mention it, looks like a good workable system for the roof. I like your idea. The rails don't take up too much real estate and are nice and low for good aerodynamics when not used. From other vehicles I've had, I know a conventional roof rack can be noisy on the highway, especially when empty.
Any idea how much weight can the roof support?

I don't think alot.

Limitation would be cross bars the more crossbars the more weight you could support.

I think how much it would support would be widely varied vs how large of an area you can spread it out over.

I've been told that it's as little as 200 lbs without a proper roof rack. I won't walk on my roof with my 250lb ass.

Hence why I want to build something. Nothing super heavy but say if it could hold me on one of the crossbars with very little deflection ( I don't ask much) I would be happy

Of course the burb seems hungry for other parts right now

Did you ever build your roof rack with the L track? I think it's a great idea and would like to see what you did.

I actually got some L track but haven't done anything with it yet. I still plan on it but have gotten pretty far behind this summer. So it will have to wait
