I dont know exactly what year my 8 lug D44 is from it has flat top knuckles so I guess it to be a 76' or so. I want to get u joints for it and i dont know what to ask for. from What I have read the joint should be the same as any 10 bolt but I need someone to shead a little light. I will be going to Napa so part numbers are good if you got it
thx

so If I go to napa and ask for that u-joint it will fit my D44 even if I dont know what year it came from

the 5-760x joints are the ones you will want. They are a lot stronger than the stock units but fit in the shafts just like the stockers. Make sure they are spicer units too. Around here i cannot get my hands on them and i work at a parts store. You may or may not have the same problem...if you do, theres always ebay and the rest of the internet. If you give them the 5-760x and don't have spicers, typically they will cross reference the number and it ends up being the 270 joint, which is the stock replacement and no upgrade.

I know here in vegas NAPA no longer carries Spicer U joints. Call around to driveline shops, a lot of them still carry Spicer. They ran me about $27 a pop.

Hey az ranger,

You can take your drive shaft with you. Thats what I ended up doing.

You should have seen the look on the counter man's face when I laid the shaft on the counter:haha: . I think he's still scratchin his head.

At least you'll know which ones will fit.

Good luck and I 2nd the Spicers.

I thought of pulling the shafts but I dont need to replace the joints now I just need a trail spare.

along the same lines I need to do ball joints pretty soon also, should I just ask for ball joints for a 76 chevy half ton or ask for D44 8 lug. its a pain in the ass trying to figure out parts when everything is from another vehicle.

Balljoints are the same...its ONLY the outers that are different from 6 to 8 lug. The housing and the knuckles are the same.

I have built an axle that is a 10 bolt but used a d44 flattop knuckle. We went to get the balljoints. The counter guys expresion was priceless when i told him it was a 10b with one Dana 44 knuckle. He told me flat out, "Those axles are totally different somebodys feeding you BS" Then looked super surprised when the parts numbers were the same :haha::haha::haha:
