My wife drives a 2001 LC
V8...around 300HP, full time 4WD and about 15MPG tops on the highway.
VERRRRY comfortable and quiet. Currently at around 107,000 miles. No major issues to speak of... rust has not been an issue. I'm not sure if the LandCruisers were built with galvanized metal as compared to some of their lower-end models, but the truck is holding up great and still looks perfect. I had it oil undercoated a few times which might have helped, and the shop says the only thing they see underneath is some surface rust. Nothing structural.
Items replaced in the last 6 years:
Rear Muffler (around $500)
Brakes (4 at around $1000) <- A traditionally expensive repair for Landcruisers
Tires (around $800)
Front wheel bearings ($400) <- The part inside the hubs with the needle bearings. Bad seal let water in and rusted them out.
A/C lines ($1000) <- Rear A/C line failures are somewhat common. The line is exposed underneath and can rust and leak.
Parking brake seized ($500) <- Also common. Must remove rear wheel hubs and shafts to repair.
All tolled, it's been a pretty cheap truck to own and drive considering it's now 10 years old.... I think I paid around $30K and the KBB says it's worth around $15K now.... ammortizing that depreciation and the money for repairs I think it's been a pretty affordable used car.
My wife loves it and would keep it forever except for the fuel costs. She is getting tired of the $75 fillups on an almost weekly basis.
