laptop scan tool

is there a particular reason aside from cost that you want to do this? i ask because i have not researched it, but a customer has the autogenuity or whatever and says it works, but isnt as detailed as he'd like

Autoenginuity is OBD 2

If your working on the 91 chevy in your signature you'll need something for OBD1

WinALDL is widely used, free, simple....

I realize this over a month old, but I did not see a response from someone who has used the AE or other OBD2 laptop based scan tools so I figured I would respond.

I started off with an AutoTap scan tool about 6 years ago. I used that for quite awhile and really liked their interface, but it was not until I realized that the scan tool could not access serial bus devices that I quickly sold it for an AutoEnginuity scanner. I am very happy with my AE scan tool.

I have the enhanced GM data pack which allows me to access all of the major systems (Airbag, ABS, TCCM, PCM, BCM, Door modules, etc) and run functional checks just like the dealer Tech2 scanner. Their coverage can sometimes be a bit limited (some older vehicles do not have full coverage of all systems), but I have found their tech support to be very good and requests for added support were dealt with promptly. If you have the factory diagnostic trouble shooting chart, the AE scan tool can walk down through it just like the Tech2. I have not come across one case in 3 years of ownership that I was not able to complete a trouble shooting step that required the Tech2. Bi-directional controls are great for diagnosing problems!!

As stated, AE is OBD2 only. It will not work with the 1995 PCMs commonly referred to as OBD1.5 and some systems in the early years (96-98 if I remember correctly) may not be serial bus controlled which may hinder communication with the AE scan tool. As I said, any case that I have come across where the scan tool did not work, AE was quick to remedy the gap in coverage unless otherwise specified.

digimoto is what I use and am quite happy with it. I use it for all our cars at my lot. Let's me know the problem and graph the details as well. I can also include a log to get how it's running through another program. Hope it at least helps someone
