Just wondering if anyone with a older truck like my '82 with the spin on water separator filter has tried using the larger Detroit Diesel filter in place of the stock one like the 33123 Wix one mine has on it..

Looking up both numbers in the Wix catalog in the specs section say its the same thread, gasket size on the base, and a 10 micron rating,so I assume its basically the same thing, only longer?..appears to be plenty of room to fit it on without anything interfereing..has the water drain and bleeder on it too..

Reason I ask is I should change the filter, its been on the truck 10 years since I got it (haven't driven it more than 5K though)..and its probably due..and a friend with a fleet of construction trucks has some leftover Detroit filters I could get for like 5 or 10 bucks, less than the Wix on it now costs by half ..probably never have to change it again in my liftime too,
LOL...:haha:

Thanks for the link..I think my stock filter base is the same thing as that # Wix unit or dam close...the 3418 Napa is the same as a 33418 Wix and I'm pretty sure thats the number that crossed over to the Detroit Diesel filters I can get cheap...if that one clears your turbo I'm sure I'll have no issues with clearance..

I thought I lucked out at a flea market,I bought a Fram fuel filter for a dollar that looked "right"--had a big inlet thread and the bleeder/drain petcocks, but when I got it home I dicovered it has 1" coarse threads and mine was fine 1" thread, and the base gasket and sizes are too far off to work, and crossing the number on it in my Wix catalog shows it fitting only some John Deere diesel combines and farm equipment..bummer!..

Might take it to the local J-D dealer and see if they'll trade me for one that fits my truck, some parts for my tractor--or buy it maybe-or give me a discount at least..if not I'm stuck with it!..at least it was only a dollar!.

I never had to mess with the square box ones.

but I always wondered why they got rid of the thread on ?

I have a few mounts for the thread on I use for other filtering needs. :D

I cant read your filter numbers, but I know a Wix 33418 is the usual Detroit Diesel filter, too bad none can be had around here for 7 bucks, more like 15-20 bucks!..does that one have have a drain petcock??..

The Wix 33123 filters around here are about the same price as the longer 33418 are..I may be able to find something cheaper in Hastings at a Farm Supply or Tractor Supply,or an Autozone special like "Deutch" brand maybe..I'll probably never have to change it again ever,if I go with the bigger one, seeing the Wix 33123 has been on my truck 10+ years now...

My "deal" fell thru,I was going to buy 3 Baldwin filters a guy had in his shop,he sold a dump truck with a Detroit and had them left over, but 2 of them had some surface rusting going on inside them, and another was a different number stuffed in the wrong box..
I figured it wasn't worth the gamble to use the "rusty" ones, though they probably would have been OK...so its back to looking for store bought "bargains"..

I should replace the air filter too,I threw a used one I had lying around on it when I bought it in '03..its only been driven maybe 5K since, but diesels really inhale a lot of air compared to a gasser..I was kind of surprised the 3 stores I looked in yesterday didn't even have books that go back to 1982 in the listings,I had to ask at the counter to look it up--and they all said "we'd have to order it in,we dont stock it"...:dunno:..
I thought a 42096 Wix or its equivalent wasn't THAT uncommon?..and its almost as much as the fuel filter is!.....last time I bought air filters they were less than 5 bucks,I feel like Rip Van Winkle, after waking up from a 20 year nap..:doah:

Those electric fuel pumps that look like a transformer, remember those?..you could buy them everywhere a few years back for 20 bucks or so..now that I need one,the few places that carry them want 50 bucks for them now that carbs are "obsolete"....

I see them all over E-bay for 15-30 bucks, but I no longer have a credit card,no pay pal,etc..I doubt any of the sellers take cash or money orders ,I see no adress listed on the places selling them with free shipping.....

napa part number 3118. 4.98$ i change it every 4 or 5 years, don,t do many miles about 2500 miles a year. had a guy that i had install same filter ,his filter rusted throught from the inside. because off the water that accumulated in it over the years. my jimmy had a squire fuel filter so i bought a housing maybe not same threads as yours . the specification says 1-12 for treads. number 3123 says same treads and cost 8.80$. thats at my cost price.hope it helps!

Wow,I guess Canada has cheaper prices than USA as far as filters go!..
I'll call around but I doubt any stores here sell them that cheap..even on E-bay the lowest price I saw was around 12 bucks + change..shipping kills that deal too..
