My Exide is about done. Probably the best battery I ever owned. I never tore off the date code circles, however, the year range of year tear off circles is 1999 through 2004. I bought the truck in 2001 and installed this new Exide between 2001 and 2004. I could look for the receipt but what's the point? Regardless, battery survived perhaps 10 plus winters and started every time.

Back to topic....

What is the largest OEM style side terminal battery case size and capacity to fit in the stock civilian battery box?

not sure if top or side terminal, but group 24's are apparently bigger: http://www.rtpnet.org/teaa/bcigroup.html you'll have to find pictures of said group sizes (those might be marine) to see what the layout is of the posts.

Any particular reason to look for a larger battery? I was looking for larger before, but for the cost and the failure rate/age-related failure that will likely never change, said screw it and went with the stock replacement.

I think next time I'm going to try a deep cycle, since mine sits so long. The fact that they better handle deeper discharges is probably better suited for that type of use. Assuming it will have enough juice to crank the engine over smartly of course.

A group 24 (or 24F) is going to be a top post battery.

A group 78 is definitely a side post battery with a case close to a group 24 size. A group 78DT will have both top and side posts.

Not sure if there are any side post batteries larger than a 78.

I think a group 27 is bigger. slightly. but not as big as a full size group 31 big rig battery.

Iirc, the 27 (and 27F) is top post only.

Well, the Exide is a 78DT. I run the truck off the side terminals and the winch cables off the top posts. A DT was a given. I guess I'll replace it with likewise.

Not necessarily larger but largest OEM. Temperatures have been as low as -20 F and this is my plow truck. Additionally, I run a winch off it and, in theory, the largest case battery will offer the greatest reserve capacity.

Yep. I modified the trays to fit dual group 31s in my superduty. nothing better than piece of mind.

I've been running a single group 31 with the standard posts in my k10 for a while, but bouncing it around it broke the factory tray. I would love to find an after market battery tray to fit it.
