Late-model 14BFF with factory disc brakes??

I work for AAM so ill tell you the facts, the 10.5 is the same as in 1988 when it was updated from the original to add more ribs for increased cooling, it still uses the same gears and carrier as the old ones. The 11.5 is a totally new design that uses a one piece carrier like a 10 bolt. With the lack of after market lockers and its massive size its no wonder that they are not being used as much in offloading.

So everything available for a 1983 14BFF will fit a 2008 14BFF then?

carrier/gear/locker wise..yes I still see the outers as possibly having some non mentioned changes.

check some part numbers on an 06 and see if they match. hub bearing /races etc.

I do notice no mention of 98 and up verse 97 and down on any paper or online catalog so I assume their is no reason why the interchange wont work.

i know the spindles are still the same on the axle tubes and the 11.5 uses the same spindle nut as the 10.5, the outers are the part that changes the most. On the prints for the center section and carrier the last revision date is in 88

Last time I looked at GM's specs, they had "given up" on rear disk brakes on the trucks. They started to go towards all disks, then went back to drums at some point. No idea if 2008 is back to disk or not. GM's media specs page should say...don't think I have the link here for that.

i know on the 11.5 aam there all disk brakes not one is made with drums

I really wish I could find GM's online spec sheets again, they changed the media center and I can't find the link anymore.

Anyways, I was looking at maybe using stock GM truck parts for a better disk swap than the Cadillac swap, and I realized that they started to list drums instead of disk...but that may have been pre-11.5".

I have a 2001 2500HD with rear discs; drum in hat. (14bff)
If there is something I could measure or take pics of let me know.

sooo.....im still a little confused....

did we come to the conclusion that a newer 10.5FF w/ disk brakes will accept a lockers and gears from an older one, but not hubs and brakes?

(what year did they start putting disks on the 14 bolt?)....

and the 11.5FF is pretty much not worth swapping due to lack of lockers and it can be used bulldoze small buildings?

I looked through the AAM brochure briefly.
From what I remember:
Lockers/Gears: Yes
Hubs/Brakes: No

small buildings gone

I remember reading somewhere where a guy put the discs on an older axle, and he put up all the part numbers and cost of the whole deal. Ive searched on the internet for it several time to no avail.

just from looking at the differences i would say that the newer flange is larger meaning that with a mill it would be pretty easy to make a conversion plate to allow the bolting up of the newer setup to the old axle

There are many kits to bolt on square body front callipers on the ff rears. The callipers are the same for 1/2 & 3/4 ton. You use all stock GM parts except for the brackets. You need the 3/4 ton front disks, and a flexible break line per side. you may need to replace the studs but that is it. I did mine for about $300 total.
