In my shop. Doing stuff.
Eileen's Trax which we bought from my mothers estate, 2 years ago next month, started making a ticking noise.

ECOTech 4 banger. 23k miles. Oil changes done early.

The crank case vacuum seams excessive. And it obviously is being drawn in by the intake.

Do not laugh at by butter fingers in the first video. I do stuff like that all the time now.

Is this a turbo motor? There was an issue for a long time with the PCV valve in the intake popping and the only fix being to replace the intake. I had a 1.4L Turbo that started consuming oil due to excessive intake vacuum and I solved it epoxying the valve built into the plastic intake shut and routing a hose externally to the throttle body with an external brass check valve.

Ahhhggg! The flashback’s!!!!

No worries señor. It’s actually really common and simple to fix.

The issue comes from the pcv in the valve cover. There is a little diaphragm in the cover that ruptures and causes a massive vacuum leak. Way worse at idle for sure. Worst case it draws enough vacuum that the crank seal lip gets sucked in and gets inverted causing more chirping.

Simple check. Pull the little cover off valve cover. You see a round looking disc section on the corner by the oil fill. You’ll see a little rectangular opening on the edge. Look at the red arrow on the pic here:

With the engine running cover that little hole with your thumb. The chirp should go away. If it’s still there but less, the crank seal inverted.

Both issues are known and should be covered under warranty.

No noise change covering the square port. Stethoscope says the ticking is injectors. Hear it on the injectors. If I listen on the fuel rail between injectors, it is twice as fast. The ticking start as a few ticks about a week ago. Now it is all of them constantly.

But it still has a lot of crank case vacuum.

Maybe the pressure across the injectors has changed due to the vacuum leak.

The service writer I talked to this morning,

SW "A 2019 Trax? Does it have a ticking noise?"

Me "Yep. And a lot of crank case vacuum that is not normal."

SW "We can get it in today if you want."

Me "Monday at 8am?"

SW "Yes. We already know what it is by your description."

Me "Should I be worried."

SW "No. It is a common issue."

Me "OK. I will have you explain it when I drop the car off. Are the parts in stock?"

SW "Yes. We have done over 100 of these?"

Me "No recall?"

SW "Not a safety issue, so none proposed."

Me "OK???????? I will see you Monday."

Yeah unless there’s an emissions or safety issue they won’t do a recall. They will have a bulletin though. Sounds like they have seen enough to recognize the issue.

I’m curious what it is. We weren’t seeing the 1.4’s doing that last year. DI injectors are noisy to start with but the change in volume is the odd thing.

No light on for codes so 8 never checked. Has a low fuel rail pressure and emissions intake code.

Go figure.

The service writer says "sounds like you nailed the issues". I asked why the check engine light is not on? He said "that will be looked into also.

Check engine light reports potential emissions issues.

Could have pending codes that have not happened often enough to turn on the light

I have seen that before. Updates like that come out regularly. However, it's never widely put out there. Even at the dealer level if there isn't a direct bulletin the only way a tech is going to know there's an update is to get into the process of updating the calibration files. Even then the system will give a very basic one or two line description of the changes.

It's a crappy way to do it for sure.
