Leaf spring orientation

Pair of stock-replacement rear 52"s, that have the U-shaped retainer gizmo on one side to keep the leaves from expanding too far.

I can't immediately think which side would flex more, so should I put that retainer on the forward or rear edge of the springs?

I would say forward. The springs are probably more prone to fan out in the rear where the shackle is moving in its arch that in the front where its just pivoting on a bolt. But I could be wrong

I shoulda thunk of that.

Mind you, maybe I'd put the retainer in the back if I wanted to limit flex.

I would say back. Factor in axle wrap, its going to try and separate the rear leafs as the axle twists forward.

could go both ways but stock i have seen both also .

on our rigs with 52 dont matter but if 56 there 4" longer on back side.

some have even eye to eye but off set center pins so watch for that in other brands.
