Looks like I'll soon be replacing at least one of my rear shackles on my 82 K2500 soon..passenger side one was all flaky and after beating all the scale off it,it now has some holes on the sides where it joins the lower bushing, and that whole bushing area is paper thin too..

On the opposite side, the u-bolt "top plate" has disintergrated ,leaving only two strips where it clamps the u-bolts to the spring, the whole center section crumbled into dust..I was told by a local GMC dealer ,that they are no longer abailablr from GM either..GREAT!.....
I spend the afternoon (or should I say wasted??) googling, and found a place or two that makes some top plates,a place called "Ballistic" that has a pair for 31 bucks + change,or I could get the same ones they made from Carolina Truggies for a few bucks less...the shackles may be available locally,I know of a few places to try that used to sell them, and I hear Doeman has some listings too,so maybe a parts store can get themm..

I am looking forward to fixing this ,about as much as being shot at sunrise...the bolts on the spring shackles I'm SURE will never come out of the bushings, never once have I been so lucky--and that means I'll need to buy new bushings, which will be a "mother" to install without taking off the springs completely..the bolts are installed with the nut end facing in towards the frame,so of course I cant use any of my "tricks" to extract them without wrecking the bushing too..

Lets see--I'll need U-bolts & the plate for the drivers side, thatll be about 50 bucks..add another 50 for two shackles,I might have some 9/16" bolts I got for my van and never used, thats another 100 bucks I dont have I need to spend on the truck..--and it still needs a master cylinder, reaer wheel cylinders, brake lines, the oil pan replaced (have one, just haven't felt good enough to install it for a year now!)..and the oil cooler hoses look like barnacles are growing on them too, they could pop any day too..:(..just looking at the truck makes me feel like peuking now..:doah::mad:..wouldn't be so bad if I had MONEY and could afford to buy all this stuff and have someone else do the "suck" jobs like the shackles ,U-bolts and oil pan..

Get sh!tfaced before you start, then you won't remember half as much of how much it sucked...;)

I'd say you would be better off putting up a wanted ad for those brackets and stuff. Many here swap the shackle flip in place of all that and just have all the stock stuff lying around collecting dust, or worse yet just chucked in the scrap pile.

You should be able to score all of that for near free, plus shipping. The busings and bolts might be a bit tougher, but it never hurts to ask if anyone has something laying around to help you out.

Most everything I'm trying to unbolt and work on on my 90 is rusted to sh!t too. I feel your pain.

Replacing shackle arms and bushings are a lot of fun with the spring loaded. If the spring some how breaks loose from the loaded position, while you are working on it, the spring can tear your face off. Unloading the springs requires, pretty much, removing the entire axle from the truck.

HAVE FUN! :D

Sawsall the shackle bolt heads off, then you can remove them from any side you want.

I've just jacked the truck up by the frame, till the rear tire just starts coming off the ground,to releive the tension on the spring-but yeah, they still go "foing" when the bolts are removed or cut off..I've had some scary moments when sawsalling them off and the saw blade binds at the end of the cut,and you give it a whack with a hammer and the spring snaps free--usually draws blood!....
The worst part is getting the bolts out of the bushings, they always rust weld themselves to the steel sleeves in them 99% of the time, forcing you to burn them out or drill them, and destroy the bushing..the only "easy" bushings to install are the poly ones in two peices, they are very expensive though--the steel shelled ones suck to install ,usually the spring was to come right off to do it,but I have done a few by spreading the eye of the spring with a chisel and using a C-clamp or ball joint press tool,or threaded rod & washers to pull them in..rather not have to mess with them though..

Steve,I sent you a PM about the u-bolts and plates..thats very nice of you to offer them !..

Hopefully I can get them one way or another, and start getting this truck ready for winter..bet snow will be flying by the time I fix everything it needs..either that or I'll be in a cold garage swearing, wishing I had done it sooner!..:doah:..

Whatever other items you may need, check with Woodwards Spring Shop on N.Montello St. in Brockton.

I've been in touch with them already..they said they would just slot out the 1/2 ton plates ,till they fit the U-bolts!....or make your own plates from a hunk of 3/8" flat plate..I could if I had no choice..

I know a guy who works at their New Bedford location..if I had any cash I'd just drive there and say "DO IT UP"!...

I'm going to try R.C. Truck in East Bridgewater, see if they still sell the shackles--they used too years ago, that had all the U-bolts and frame hangers ,leaf springs and tons of body repair panels,etc..I haven't set foot in there in probably 5 years now though..

I think Rene had the best suggestion--get hammered before I start the job, then I wont feel so much pain...:D
