My DD 96 chevy s-10 has developed quite the power steering leak and I believe I have traced it to the bottom of the gearbox where the pitman arm attaches it leaks probally a pint every 5 days or so. So a reman is 162 like I said this is my dd so it cant be "down" for long I got a 3 day weekend coming up and am looking to find out if that seal on the bottom can be replaced (why is it leaking is there more seals bearings that need replacing too) or should I just pony up and get a reman unit.

Most of the time when a pitman shaft seal fails, its because of the bushing it rides on in the box is worn too--so replacing just the seals may fix it only temporarily...The seals can be removed by taking off the pitman arm, removing the snap rings that hold the seals in the box,and putting a dran pan under the box and starting the engine ,then cut the wheels all the way to one side and hold it there a few seconds, usually after doing that it'll blow the seals right out,so you wont have to risk damaging the sterring gear housing trying to pry them out...some guys prefer taking the pitman cover off the box and taking the shaft out, then use a punch to drive them out--if your going to do that you may as well see if a new bushing can be had and installed while its apart...might just be easier to get a rebuilt steering box...
