Ok so I had to cover about 1100 miles this weekend. A good portion of that was towing my little tent trailer, and after about 300 miles I noticed oil on the tongue. Started looking under the K5 and found, the rear driveline seal is leaking (I thought this was a 205, but it has a slip yoke), the front driveline seal or the adapter is leaking. I can't tell which it is, if it is the adapter, I don't know how the oil is getting over to the output for the front drive shaft. I knew when I bought it that the rear was leaking, but it is a very small leak, leaving a couple of drops in the driveway after a week of sitting. Anybody else experienced this? If so, how hard is it to replace the seal on the front driveshaft output? What are the typical leak points for the 205? I need to get all of my leaks fixed before BB07 if I am going to go. And I really don't like the idea of leaks anyway.

my 80 gmc is a 205 with a slip type. so i guess 205 makes bolt on and slip on

Well, that helps answer that question, but now I just need to know how hard it is to replace that front seal, and if the leak may be the adapter to the 350. I have heard that the o-ring seal there can cause the problem, but I can't imagine it throwing the oil out that far.

my 205 is a non slip

umm, i spent 4 ish hours yesterday sealing everything... EVERYTHING

not the most fun, but it can be done

i was skeptical about it tossing oil like it did, but now that i sealed it all, no new oil has shown up, you can see the oil that burned into my exaust, not too happy, still gotta clean it

So any tips on replacing the front yoke seal? That appears to be the bulk of the oil I am seeing. I know the rear is pretty easy on mine, just pull the dl, pop the seal, tap the new one in and your done, but I have never done the front.

1980 was the only year the 205 had a slip yoke.

Thanks for that info. I was pretty sure the ID tag had shown it was a 205, but couldn't remember for certain.

if its anything like doing a pinion seal which i *believe* it is....all yuo need to do is pull drive shaft, score the nut and stud (inside yoke) unscrew the bolt, tap off yoke, tap off seal replace accordingly, and then put the nut on and alight the 2 lines yuo previously made.

not too hard. really. i on hte other hand have to drop my case and pull hte 2 halfs apart and replace that seal. ah well though, itll give me something to do one day. haha

Thanks for the advice. I plan on crawling underneath the beast this week, don't know which day for certain. Gotta plan for enough time to verify that one of the axle seals is leaking as well. If that is leaking, I think it is time for a 14FF. I don't want to spend the money to press the bearing and seal on the axle for the 12SF.

This is some REALLY bad advise for replacing a pinion seal. Reusing a pinion nut will result in it backing off and your rear end ceasing to exist. DON'T DO IT!

As for the t-case seal, just take off the driveshaft, put the t-case in 4WD and remove the nut that holds the yoke on. Remove the yoke and replace the seal (if the yoke doesn't show too much wear from the seal). Replace the yoke and torque it to spec (something like 150 ft. lbs.).

This is why I am asking the questions, this is something I have never done. I will be checking everything, and possibly looking for a new yoke that uses u-bolts instead of the straps. If I have to pull it anyway, might as well make it stronger at the same time.

I also had a leaky 205 and found that the tranny was leaking oil into the x-case and causing it to leak. The 205 was about 1/2 quart overfilled when I took the filler plug out. You might check the adaptor, but when I fixed this, the xcase didn't leak anymore (not much anyway)

If that was the case here, it would be trans fluid instead of 90 weight. It coated my trailer so I know it is the heavy oil from the 205.
