Led lights

I'm trying to hook up a set of led tail lights on my 85 k5 .I can only get the tail lights to work or the brake lights but not both. I've got a brown,yellow and black coming from the k5 and a white,red and black from the led,have tried every comb. Anybody have a clue what I'm doing wrong.

I've read that you need one of these to make things work right. Don't know if it is true or not.
