1989 GMC Jimmy with auto locking hubs, I have notices a loud ticking noise coming from what I believe to be from the left front. It seems to be noticeable at 25 to 40 mph and after that between the wind and the tire noise, I can tell if I just cant hear it or it goes away. It makes the noise when rolling at that MPH in neutral and when I apply the brakes. I jacked the truck up and the wheels spins great and cant get noise from either side. (possibly because I can spin them by hand fast enough)I was wondering if some how is the 4x4 auto hubs trying to fly out a little maybe? Wheel bearings don"t seem loose either....

My 87 did that before I threw the auto hubs away. Sounds like on might be trying to engage. Do your self a favor and put manuals on that rig. I have the set of auto hubs I pulled from Big Red if you want them just pay the shipping.

Thanks you for the offer.... I will put manuals on it, this is a new truck to me and I just took it to the dunes this past weekend, and it had auto's on it.....Just noticed it as I had been driving around town prior to the dunes....

To check if it's the auto hubs, pretty sure it is, just remove the hubs and cover ends with plastic wrap secured by rubber bands around exposed hubs and take it for a drive. Don't think the hubs will get hot enough to melt plastic wrap on a short trip.

u-joints are tight, but possibly dry as they don't have grease fittings...I am going to try engaging the 4x4 and see if the ticking goes away...
