I would like to narrow my K5 Blazer and install an exo cage similar to these pictures, but I also want to keep it legal.

Has anyone ever narrowed a K5, exo caged and installed/made custom fender flares that are detachable to keep it street legal?

I don't know of anything inherently illegal about an exo cage, but I've heard that at a certain overall width you need extra marker lights. Think about the sides of flatbed wreckers or large service beds. Most of the trucks pictured are wider at the tires than the exo cage anyway. Some areas have some strange rules about fenders and/or mudflaps, but it's hard to know what's really enforced.

Of course with narrowing, you have to be sure to still have headlights, taillights, turn signals and all of that. For street use, it's wise to have something resembling stock headlights and not just light bars or similar.

Didn't one of the magazine guys do something like that with a tube buggy build that utilized the plastic 4 wheel drive forklift style fenders? The fun buggy.

Just to say it - that was Christian Hazel ("hbombindustries" on IG), not sure whatever happened to the buggy.

I believe it's Fred Williams the "fun buggy". It's in the background of dirt every day once in awhile

haven't read the replies yet, but one thing that immediately comes to mind in Naz, umm Joysey, is door laws... jeeps with containment wall, ok.. tube doors on a K5, not so much...

I have driven my blazers in Texas with no doors; even had cops pull up beside at a stoplight and no problem.

I love AZ as long as you don’t have Cali plates you’re golden lol

if the rig is badarse enough, they often get overlooked IMO... I've driven ratty junk around that wasn't "too" illegal and would get pulled over all the time.. cops literally give Mutt the thumbs up and I'm pretty certain it's not 100% NJ righteous...

I think an exo build would be super fun... not a project in my future, but it would be fun to tackle..

Here they drive rzr’s and KOH style trucks on the streets everyday and quads. This is a very special place though.
