Legit Practise?

Well guys in my case I bought a New MS streets and trips from a guy. He charged $20.38 S&H from 400 miles away. I am cool with what it cost to take stuff to mail and a persons time.

The way he shipped it was out it in a thicker and wider box (I still have it) no packing. It cost $6.95 to ship he then charged me $1.99 insurance instead of the $1.35 it cost.

I left neutral feed back and he slammed me with a negative. I have 273 feed back and he screws me with a negative. I think the best way for feed back is neither side can see it till after it is left. That way no one can retaliate for feed back.

Did you see the shipping charges before you bought the item? Was there a possibility to see them? If so, you screwed up. It doesn't matter what it costs him, it is what you were told that you would have to pay. If he only paid 5 bucks for an item he is selling for 20, it doesn't matter what he paid, only what you are going to pay. Its the same thing with the shipping.

When I sell stuff on ebay, I always make money on shipping. It takes my time and effort to ship it. Also, I sometimes inflate the shipping just so I can get the little extra for my item.
If I have a no reserve auction, I always inflate shipping. Or I will make the starting bid enough to cover the item and shipping and then say "free shipping".

As to the original post......I'd tell him to forget it. If I was paying a premium, and shipping from Germany(don't forget about the customs fees you are going to have to pay when it gets here) and he added more to it, I would say forget it.

In my opinion everything should have a reserve that encompasses what the seller considers the cost of doing business (time, packaging, and the least they are willing to accept for the item).

After that, add the shipping. It is the most straightforward way of doing business which makes the seller appear less shifty and makes everything easier for both seller and buyer.

Fine print may be fair practice in our world but let's face it, there is a devious less honourable edge to it.

Nevertheless as long as ALL the costs are posted (excessive or not) then the seller is in the clear.

Yeah but setting a reserve costs the seller money too!

Also I think a reserve takes some of the intrigue out of auctions, I know I dislike auctions with reserves, unless I know what it is, and it's low.

Sounds like your guy is a bit of a snake no matter what, hopefully the piece is good!

When I see a seller who offers truck parts, lycra stretchpants and handpainted dishware in their current listings...it's time to be cautious.
Geez, Greg, if you're going to use my eBay listings as an example, you could at least have the decency to bid on some things. :haha:

NO! I had a few ended for please add 3% if you use pay pal.

Here is eBay http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-surcharges.html

Sellers may not charge eBay buyers an additional fee for their use of ordinary forms of payment, including acceptance of checks, money orders, electronic transfers or credit cards. Such costs should be built into the price of the item.

I would ask if he charges fee for a credit card. If he says no go buy one of those cards and put the amount on it and ony leave what it cost. Then he can't jack your info.

so this is a no-no? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1984...oryZ6154QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Another story

Here's a good one along the same lines.

My buddy listed a German WWII bayonet a couple of days ago. Came home to a notice that the auction had been canceled;

We appreciate that you chose eBay to list the following auction-style listing...

However, your (s) violates eBay's Hateful or Discriminatory policy and has been removed ...

Sellers may not list items that promote ... or glorify hatred, violence or racial intolerance, or items that promote organizations (such as the KKK, Nazis, neo-Nazis and Aryan Nation) with such views. For example, eBay will generally remove items that bear the marks of such organizations, such as relics from the KKK or Nazi helmets.

So he incredulously replies back asking in what way was a German war relic being reflected on in that manner and their response was;

eBay policy prohibits sellers from attempting to hide prohibited
markings. This includes:

- cropping or editing images
- using images that show only part of a German WWII item (for example,
showing only the reverse side of a medal or dagger)
- listing a German WWII item without any images to avoid showing a
prohibited symbol

There is no swastika on this knife. And they are refusing to return the listing fee.

What a bunch of bull. The really weird thing is that there is a TON of stuff with swastikas available on eBay, patches, buttons etc.

I think there are just too many items, and people with way too much time on their hands report items they see that they think violates policy. Same stupidity on craigslist, both are arbitrary and Communist.
