Does anyone know the total length of a sm465 mated to an np205 are there any difference in strenght or length that may have differed over the years. Thanks. Geoff

I don't know the dimensions but there is a difference before/after '85. Pre '85 assemblies are shorter than '85+ (introduction of 32 spline combo) but again I don't know the actual lengths. Imo, the '85+ 32 spline design is stronger based on spline count and the elemination of the floating coupler (less moving parts to wear, break, etc).

What does the coupler do. Is that in the t case or inbetween the trans and t case
It's between, in the pre '85 set up the trans has a male tailshaft and the t-case has a male input so there is a floating coupler (or sleeve) to join the two. This set up is 10 spline and can be prone to excessive spline wear under heavy use.
I've stripped out two of those before.
