Lets bash the parts counter guys!!

It depends where Im at, Oreillys back home is good, the few times ive been in Napa at home they have given me good service to. Now up in emmetsburg I perfer the Locally owned parts store over napa. The guys are alot friendlier, they give me a college discount too which is really great.

I have had problems with Advance and Autozone. The car lot my father owned dealt with Carquest and never had a real problem. Some items there were a little too expensive for me. Now that I am away from my home town I have tended to use Napa and a few local parts stores around here. They are like the ones back home. ( Locally owned and everyone knows you after a few visits. Do't even have to tell them what type of vehicle oyu drive because they remember you. Go in, have a seat at the stool and wait your turn. Why your waiting feel free to smoke in the store and chit chat with other people. If parts aren't in the computer, out comes the books and a part number is found. Now if it isn't in stock they call another store in town, and send their driver to go and pick it up while you wait. Longest I have waitied is 10 minutes on 16 lugs and nuts for my rear axle. Now the other stores, the A stores, well if they aren't in stock they will call another on ein town and guess who is going to pick them up. Yep, you. I spent all day bouncing from the 6 or so different stores trying to track down 6 lugs and nuts. And one guy had the nerve to try and sell me rear ones for the front and swore up and down he was right. After I found this one in town, I will never go back to one owned by a chain unless I truely have too.

My family lived in a small town in SW Iowa (Avoca) from 69 to 97. The only parts store is a NAPA. I hate NAPA, every time I had too order a part, they'd get it wrong. I could take the old part in with me, set it side by side with thier new part, and they'd still argue with me saying I'm wrong and thier part it right. No offence intended to anyone from the smaller communities, but that is why I say "Small town, small mind".

i guess i'm somewhat spoiled in the last decade or so... everything comes thru on our account at work for me.. we deal with a small place called Beach Auto here locally... they treat us good because we're a large account for them. the boys definitely try to hook me up..

they can get a ton of stuff too, being a marine community here, they also order from alot of the same marine distributors that we do.. its nice if i need 10' of 00 marine battery cable too late in the day for me to order, they have it. sometimes you have to remember to specify that you want the better quality parts, because they carry both..

that being said, there are 3 counter guys. 2 of them being the owning partners. well, those 2 are idiots. well, maybe not idiots, maybe preoccupied, but they've sent me many a wrong item. now, the 3rd guy, Rich, is gold.. about my age, 40, and is a great parts guy.. never fails me..

i've found over the years the most critical thing for parts guys is to know what info they need when it comes to different products.. nothing worse than getting a callback of "ummm, does that have AC?" you should know you need to know that....

the Napa back in my hometown growing up was as some described here.. real good shop, very knowledgable. machine shop, etc... and i've never been to an Autozone (except with Wraenking :smirk: ) or other "chain" store, thank god... :surepal:

NAPA Auto

This is the last hardcore auto parts company left. They even still have catalogs with exploded views and every thing like auto parts stores used to have "back in the day". The only problem I have with NAPA is that some of the guys have real smug attitudes like they are Gods gift to the automobile, just because they are good at what they do. These guys sometimes intimidate people, but they do not intimidate me. After 15 years as an auto mechanic, if one of these guys got arrogant with me, I would tell them to kiss my butt.

AutoZone

This company would hire Monkeys if they would work for only Bananas, but they do have the best prices. The one thing good I can say about AutoZone is that they have the most "user friendly" web site of all the other auto part distributors in America. I always get the part number for what I need off of their web site before I go to AutoZone because I cannot tell you how many times I have had one of their pimple faced teen aged employees get flustered, and just tell me they did not carry the part because they could not find it on their computer.

. They always pick on parts that fail prematurely and say that they "must be Auto Zone":D

That's just because they fail to realize that over half the parts that NAPA sells, you can get at Autozone for half the price.

Autozone has more good parts than nearly any other parts store, for half the price. Just like any store, you simply have to watch what you buy there. Don't buy ignition there, don't buy house brand or Autozone trademark anything unless you want cheap crap.

When you buy ignition always get the premium stuff. It doesn't matter if its 3x the price, you get a much better product.

Always buy name brand brakes. If it's not something you've heard of before, walk out. Cheap brakes suck.

Other than that Autozone is great. High quality reman stuff like wiper motors, distributors, brake calipers, etc. Dana/Spicer chassis, Raybestos brakes by request, Fel-Pro, brake hardware is all good, Aimco brake rotors, Johnson Controls batteries, etc. The list goes on and on.....they have some great parts......and some that are horrible and I wouldn't put on my grandmother's lawnmower.

It's too bad NAPA/Carquest still rape the walk-in customer in the name of "Saving the auto service business" as they rape their customers for list price for nearly every part, which should be criminal in my opinion. One day this will all change and everybody will pay the same price, but until then, we just have to deal with the pathetic pricing at sommercial parts stores.

I have an account with the local Carquest and those bastards actually expect me to pay full retail price despite having a charge account and a commercial tax number for my business. Simply amazing. What they also fail to realize is that I know what their cost is on nearly every part in the store. They tried selling me a $22 set of brakes for $57. Needless to say I let the driver drive all the way back to the store, called the manager, complained, and the driver came all the way back out to pick the parts up and write me a credit for 100% of the price they'd charged me for the parts.

Simply amazing, the business practices of some of these companies. :surepal: I'm glad the Carquest I worked at wasn't like that.....we gave master installer price to nearly everyone with a commercial account, AND our loyal walk-in customers as well.

we have a good size town 12 miles away, the autozone and napa are across the street from each other. at the autozone, no one knows what they have. i asked for a brake hose for a 89 chevy truck 2wd,
"Brake hose? you mean steel brake line?"
i said "the rubber line from the frame to the caliper"
"we don't carry that, sir"
"yes you do, i bought one TWO DAYS ago" i took the keyboard and punched it in my self and pointed "right there" :screwy:

Napa in the same town is usually better than autozone, but they are way overpriced. there are some stuff that you can get at napa that ive found that no one can get. like the CV rebuild kit for our trucks.

ive learnt who to talk to and who not to talk to at autozone and napa.

i just about always endup going to the carquest that is 2 blocks from my house. they are about the same price as autozone on just about everything, even carry the quality brands that carquest doesn't normally carry. these guys over the top for their costomers. most of the time they look in the catalogs instead of the computer because the computer is always wrong. but, there have been a few things they can't get. ive have been going here for 8years, (since i moved here) and they always know what vehicles i drive and what ive bouhgt in the past.

Advanced auto parts is one place I'll never shop. A few years ago, my sister - in law who lives in pittsburgh got me some gift certificates for my birthday. She was assured they would be accepted nationwide, paid her money, and sent them to me.

I go to Advanced to pick up oil & filter for the wife's camaro, and I hand the counter person my gift certificate, and he looks at me like I handed him a tarantula or something... He says " we don't issue or accept paper gift certificates, and haven't for a long time.. are you sure this is real"?

I said yes, and explained where they came from, and he tells me that not only do they only accept their plastic gift cards, the PA store I claim mine came from has been out of business for some time.

I demand to see the manager, and she is of NO help whatsoever. I asked her to log into her computer, so she could see all of the money I've given that damn place over the years, and she says even though she recognizes me, she still won't help. I then told her " so you're telling me then, that your chain has my sister in laws money, and you won't live up to you're end of the deal.. how is that good business"? she just looked at me and restated the company policy.

I marched my unhappy ass into the parking lot, and called my sister in law, who got me the number of the PA store that sold her the certificates, called them and got the manager, who had all of HER information, and was willing to set these people right...

I walked in, and told them I had the manager of the PA store on my cell phone, and handed it to the manager i was dealing with. They thought I was playing a game at first, but the PA manager told her I was legit.

They hang up, and the manager of my store called HER boss, who told her to just go ahead and take the damn certificate, and that it was no big deal to reconcile the books to reflect what was going on.

For the moment I was happy, until the manger had the counterman I dealt with earlier ring up my order.. He gave me the dirtiest look, and was very dismissive with me, so I just told them one and all that I couldn't believe I had to work as hard as I did to get THEM to do the right thing. I haven't been back since.

Customer service means nothing anymore, and it's really all of our own faults.. we'd rather save a buck by going to a chain, and therefore put the mom and pop stores out of business. I remember my neighborhood parts store letting me rummage through boxes behind the counter looking for fittings when I was plumbing my 69 Camaro. They don't exist anymore, and now, I deal with counter guys who argue with me when I try to buy spark plugs for it. I had one guy insist that camaros weren't made with V8's, because all he knew were the V6 crapboxes. As for my K5, it has taken some convincing that not all blazers are the little ones, and I have to look over the dudes shoulder when he uses his computer to find my stuff. ( Thankfully, my CK5 membership has enabled me to be smarter than the counterman. If your'e reading this for free, stop reading and sign up for memebrship. Now. )

Rant

As consumers, we demand lower and lower prices, so we get those prices, but the real costs come when the stores are staffed with minimum wage earners, and they peddle inferior crap. This mentality is what's killing the auto and textile industries in this country, and it gets better when the suppliers to these industries get squeezed to the point where they have to move offshore to lower their costs, or go under. We can bitch at the politicians all we want for the way things are, but our buying habits have as much, if not more to do with why things are the way they are. Rant off.

In my day, I have come across more poor parts salespeople than a I have good ones. That said, I find it hard to bash them...too much. I tend to go back to the ones that are helpful/knowledgeable. Even though I've never held down that particular job, I can see it from both sides. Plenty of folks come in with no idea what part they need. Sure, most of us here are experts on 73-87 Chevys, but do you really expect someone who sells alternators and CV axles all day to know exactly what a 1350 size Ujoint is? Or a spindle bearing? Give these folks a break. Most of them are helpful, if not knowledgeable.

I useually go to the next town over, to the autovalue and get stuff there... they might be a little over priced but they know what they are talking about. They also use books, not computers.. Only time they use a computer is to look up what they have in a wharehouse or the store 15 min away

I'm in the computer bussiness and everyone comes to us to get their stuff fixed. The other computer stores arround town other then us, just dont know what to do about somethings. Just like auto parts stores. There are the people that know what they are doing and going to get you what you need and fix your problem or you can go somewhere where they dont know whats they are doing and pay for it twice. I just did a power jack repair on a laptop, fixing what the other computer store did. They tried to use super glue to fix a broken power jack. Idiots!!! I did the job right desoldered eveything and soldered a new one back on.

NAPA may cost more than Auto Zone, but I get good service and parts that I can count on. With NAPA I don't have to worry about cheap a$$, lame, dpos parts that will fall to pieces in 6 month, or dip stick punks that don't know their head from a hole in the ground. To me NAPA is worth the extra money, to not have to put up with that crap.

I like NAPA but they do not always have everything I need. I go to Checker or Autozone when I have no other choice.

The Napa guys around here are friendly and take their time to find the right part. They can get your parts in the same day unless you come in late.

Also give Kudos to the Grand Junction, CO NAPA. Coming through there last winter out of Utah with an engine purchase in the bed when the water pump decided to quit. I limped into the NAPA on the east end of town about 6pm Saturday evening in the snow & cold. The people there were great, let me use the back to warm up, clean up. They were great.

Had to change the pump under a dim parking lot light, mostly by feel when I could feel my frozen fingertips. That was fun. It would have been hell without their help.

NAPA :waytogo:

I worked parts at Trak Auto for about 4 years before they closed. I was young, 16, but I did know my stuff. I just had to get used to the computer system, and the backup paper catalogs. People would usually give me no respect. I mean, without a hello, a customer would say "Is there someone who knows what theyre talking about?" It would really bother me. Then a bunch of bad purchases made by the owners forced the company to let its stock dwindle down. Then they started to lose commercial accounts with some of the big companies: Fed-Mog, Allied Signal, A1 Cardone, Reliable, etc... Shouldnt be too big of a deal, plenty of stock on hand. Well, we ran out of parts to sell.

If you cant sell brake pads for a Honda Accord, or a water pump for a 91 Econoline, people lose faith and shop elsewhere. And people get very nasty when you cant help them. They seem to think its MY fault for not having brake pads in stock (where I have been on the phone with the DC for hours trying to get popular out of stock items). Everyone has to say a smart comment.

After Trak got bought out by Advance, things improved, but only for the general consumer. We were trained to meet a target sales quota for the week. We were told to basically push unnecissary items, like washer fluid, armor all, etc... I felt embarrased to ask a mechanic if he needed brake fluid to change his brakes, and my managers would usually say something. I ended up quitting. Im not a salesman.

The paper catalogs were actually taken out of the store when it was converted, and most Advance stores Ive seen dont have paper catalogs. The only method of parts lookup is the computer or previous knowledge.

I understand everyones frustration, I have it too, but Ive also been on the other side, and give the counterman sometime to look up parts and get them. I usually know what part #s I need anyway. If they insist that Im wrong and theyre right, I calmly show them were they made the error. I try to help. Ill try to remember some funny stories and post them up later.

another one today!

I went to Pep Boys to buy a gallon of dextron(they are the only ones besides wal-mart that sells gallon jugs of it,its cheaper and easier to carry than individual qts.)and since a blizzard was bearing down on us,ever jerk in the world decided it was time to pack every store and parking lot,and traffic was insane, looked like a evacuation for a neuclear war or something-

-anyway-in line to pay for my dextron and a qt.of brake fluid,10 people waiting in line, one young girl cashier with a horrified look on her face, looking for the manager--seems a lady at the front of the line bought some wiper blades that didnt fit,and she had gone to Napa and got the right ones-

-now she is trying to return the Pep Boys wiper blades in Napa's boxes, and the manager was very polite, but said"We cant accept theese in Napa boxes, you cant return them,I'm sorry"--the lady started to put up a big stink, finally one woman behind me said "He wont take them back, get over it lady--I dont have all day!"--the lady said "EXCUSE ME!!--I WAS HERE FIRST"---I knew this wasnt going to end anytime soon,so I walked back to the shelf, put the Dextron and brake fluid back, and I asked another clerk stocking shelves if the had any more diesel fuel anti-gel--he says"no,we only get 6 or 7 bottles at a time, and it goes fast when its cold like this(-10 here last nite!)--I got disgusted and left,I had to go 8 miles to my old workplace to get the anti-gel,and it was cheaper there to boot!:screwy: -- read part 2 of my wonderful day I've had in another post...

AutoZone... Never Again...

Had my LAST dealing with AZ about 2 months ago.. Had some starter problems that drove me crazy. For a period of 3 months the starter would work for about 3 days and then just quit. No turn-over, no clicks.. nothing. Would pull the starter and check it, would work fine.. Put back in... OK for a couple days..

Changed the battery cables for new 2 guage ones... That didn't help. Rewired everything from the coil down to the seloniod, worked for about a week then dead as a doornail at work.. Pulled starter out, took it back, checked out fine.. Back in it goes... Another couple of days, dead again..

Eliminate ignition key with a direct push-button starter switch to seloniod.. Worked beautiful.. for about 4 days... SOB dead again at work... Worked on the last thing it could be... tightened up the steering column...spent 3 hours fixing it...worked fine started it up about 15 times... worked great...NEVER MOVED THE TRUCK..went to go out someplace with it that evening...DEAD WHERE SHE SAT.. Was at the AutoZone store in Momma's van and talked to the Manager On Duty, telling him the whole story of what I've done to it. He said fine, bring it in and we'll change it out.

Couldn't get it back there the next day when he was there, so it was about 3 days later. Different manager and he wasn't going to change it out. After telling him the whole deal, he decided to put it on the machine and check it. I told him it was going to be fine, just like it had been each other time. But I told him I WAS NOT LEAVING WITH THAT STARTER..  He RELUCTANTLY finally gave me another starter saying the old one had some bearing noise in it..BULL****!!!!

Have to go by there just to see him and tell him the new starter works fine...I just don't buy anything there anymore since they're right next door to O'Rielly's.. But they're not on the top of my list either. Got brakes from there for Momma's '99 Voyager.. Two different wheel sizes.. 14 and 15 inch.. told him I needed the 15 inch size...Get home, the Blazer dead in the driveway with a MYSTERIOUS STARTER PROBLEM...  Have the brakes off the van, can't get the new ones to fit. DUMBASS, at O'Reilly's gave me the 14 inch size.. Have to put it all back together and go back and get the right pads..

Haven't used NAPA yet but there is a local parts store that I know will be getting more of my business in the future..

#1, Napa does not sell Fel-Pro gaskets, among other things. I'm sorry but I will not use a Victor gasket on my engine.

#2, the Napa here sucks, their idiots at the counter are horrible.

#3, the moral of the story is to find a good parts counterman that you both know each other by first name and get ALL of your parts from him/her.
