Lets discuss wheelbase

I think we have a winner here.....

Wheelbase AND breakover angle seem to be the "key". An improper mix won't get you any further over the obstacles.....

Maybe I'll go throw this into Excel for a while???? .....

Absolutely. The guys on pirate say 3 x your tire's height is a good start.

im at the stock 106.5, works pretty good for the jeep trails. steep inclines has a little pucker factor. i think if/when i completly redesign the suspension im gonna short for around 110".

i agree with blacksheep10. tire size and lift have alot to do with what wheelbase is best for a stable rig.

Than i guess 42's at 109 1/2" are a bad idea for me than huh?

A little short, but as I stated, that's only a starting point. My 38.5 x 3 = 115.5, and I'm 119.

As stated, breakover and wheelbase are closely inner-twinned.

I have been running 116.5" on 40's and I think it is a little too long even with a flat belly. I have a hard time keeping weight on the front end to pull. My buddy with 42's and 117" wb does very well.

I just changed up my rear suspenion a little and I think it will help with the unloading up front. I have plenty of ground clearance http://www.austink5.net/gallery/albums/album97/flat_belly.sized.jpg so now it is just a matter of tweaking to get it perfect

Hmm, 3 times the tire height. Interesting, I hadn't seen that. I think that is a little on the long side, but not too far from where I *think* I want to be. 41" (rough actual height of 42" TSLs) time 3 would be 123", and I like just under 120"

Im currently at 108"....a little longer would be nice but then I'd need taller tires to avoid high centering at the crest of waterfalls.

I'm currently at the stock 106.5" on my K5, and I regularly wheel with a buddy who has longbed, regular cab F-250 (133"-ish?). The trails around are usually fairly tight in the woods. The F-250 takes a LOT more body damage but generally gets around okay (he has little regard for sheetmetal though). The F-250 can usually beat me up pretty good on hill climbs, but does have some clearance issues.

Both trucks, at least at the time, had the exact same setup.........38" TSL's, 1-tons, locked f&r.

Lucy... You have som 'splainin to doooo.....
the 400/205 did well, a little long. My center limiter on my rear end to keep the 1350's on the rear shaft from bottoming was only allowing 4 inches of droop at the pumpkin. I want to stretch the rear out a little, gain some movement. The powerglide with a 1.65" stickout shaft into a 203, 3" face to face on the 203 to 205 case, I am 1 inch shorter with 2 cases than with the 400 205. The main reason I am getting away from the 400, really, is the fact that I just broke the case in half at the rear of it. I have 2 more 400's that will go in sitting in the grain bin behind the barn, but I am ready for some reduction. Sure, only from 22:1 up to 33:1, but I think it will be very noticable. It is a win/win/win situation as far as crawl ratio, flat belly(clock it flat) front driveshaft finally tucked up out of the way (from the clocking), rear driveshaft angle. This is still a budget budget poor farmer build, that is why I make all the adapters myself:D

What is Jason now?

I was at 168, currently at 176 since I moved the front axle forward 8" to help approach angle. BUT, I am moving the rear axle forward as well. Probably moving it forward 24" or so... Should end up around 152" when done. You guys may think I'm crazy but I was owning all the stuff in moab

I like a longer wheelbase myself. My factory shortbox is now at about 125" wb thanks to backward 56's in the rear combined with a 1.5" homemade zero rate and l.5" offset in the front, too. With 8" lift and 44's, one of my proudest moments was making a switchback turn in the woods in one try after the toyota on 33's in front of me had to do a 3 point turn. I'll take all the wheelbase I can get for climbs and mud. In the rocks and on trails it's a mixed blessing. In almost every sort of terrain I've encountered thusfar, I think my longer wheelbase has helped. I uploaded a couple pics, but they only do so much to show the stretched wheelbase.

Alright Greg, keep it on topic or you SIR will join the Band!:D

Actually, with the Pirate config, I guess doing fine with the 122" WB and 42's! Woot!

Short tranny is fine Kelly, but why live with the lower first gear? Go with a tried and true TH350. You can clock the NP203 upside down without problems. Myself and the Okie boys agree that the TH350 is..... DinoMYTE!

If you threaten TortillaMan, you won't get a copy of his new "ExcelWB" program....

I've already got it modded to calculate breakover angles, and the "area" under the truck (basically the triangle created by connecting the tires and the lowest part of the underbelly)... I've only just started looking at the numbers so I'm not sure what "good" looks like vs. "bad"

Anyone want to chime in with what a GOOD breakover angle (BOA) should be?
