I'm looking for ideas on a homemade rear bumper and would like to see some of the things you guys/girls have built.

I haven't made it yet... but I was thinking of 3" schedule 40 pipe with long radius butt weld 90's welded on and then the welds ground smooth.
They would look close to Smitty builts but Waaaaayyyy heavier duty!
I was thinking about painting it to match my lower body color when I paint the truck, as well as the nerf bars and front bumper with hoop.

Anyone done that yet?

I've got a perfect set of chrome bumpers. What the heck are they worth?

It doubles as a snow plow.

I made it to compensate for the body lift. It is actually flush with the frame. The rear is exactly the same.

I dont even want to tell you how much material was. You will never look at custom bumpers the same again.

Hello Waxer, Thanks for the pics. Your bumper is exactly what I had in mind. Could you post some specific info about your bumper? I am interested in making one for myself. I wouldn't be selling it or anything though.

Sure, it is made out of 3"x6"x60" rectangular tubing, 3/16" wall. I basically cut the shape you see out of a direct rectangular piece. Cut 1/4" plate for the bottom of the cut for extra support should I jack it up on either end with a hi-lift.

The attachment points are made out of 1"x2" bar stock that goes completely through the bumper and welds to the mounting bracket as well as on the front and rear 1/4" plates that are on the front/rear of the bumper for added support.

The tow receiver is done in the same fashion. 1/4" plates front and rear and double sheer welded for added strength.

The hinge for the tire carrier is Rockstompers and was welded into the bumper. Regardless of what they say about it being a trailer spindle, I find that doubtful cause it appears to be a mild steel bar that is machined. No metal hardening like you would expect a spindle to have. Nonetheless it bent when the carrier came flying open after hitting the tire on a boulder while dropping off it. Still need to fix that.
