Lets talk high HP manuals in cars.

i was just reading in TDR that the 6 speed manuals in the new dodge diesel pickups are rated at 1400 ft. lbs. i wonder what kind of HP they can handle. i believe its the NV 4600.
That would be the NV5600. It can handle far more than 1,400ft lbs and is a great tranny behind the cummins, I almost bought one until I decided on a cummins/auto combo.

That tranny would never work in a muscle car. First it weighs a TON and it first is a granny gear. That is a pickup tranny meant for towing.

ya, i didnt think it would be a candidate for a muscle car. just thought i'd pass that little tidbit of information on. dodge rates it at 1400 ft-lbs. i dont doubt it can handle more but thats what they say. just like GVW ratings, sure you can exceed them by a good margin without breaking things, but it doesnt mean since you can they should increase the ratings.

The guy from TTC with the twin turbo'd cummins powered burb had an NV5600 and he was SUPPOSEDLY pushing 3,400ft lbs or something. :) Both the NV4500 & 5600 are holding up to crazy amounts of power with the 5600 slightly stronger. For 5 grand the 47RE auto can take basically just as much, which the auto is my preference. ;)

If your going to have that much HP, your best bet is to go with a built TH400 with manual valve body and manual clutch. With this setup you will have a clutch pedal which is a valve controlling fluid going to the clutches of the tranny. It is used for starting off only, after that you would just shift manually without the "clutch".

Also, air shifters work with autos to automatically shift at predesignated rpm. So you just floor it and go. That getting into all the computers, throttle stops, and so on though.

If I remember correctly, those Jericho racing boxes are non-synchro, that's one way to get more strength, synchro gears are weaker than straight cut gears. Many moons ago, drag racers used to run "clutchflites"- Chrysler Torqueflite adapted to a clutch- shifted VERY hard, but damn near unbreakable.

Now that is what I'm talking about, too bad they don't list it's power numbers.

ya i noticed that too. i know there is a guy running one behind a 650 horse NA big block. im sure a quick email to them would shed some light on the subject.

is 5,500 dollars a reasonable price though?
No, it's a crazy, "you spent how much on a car part for that old junker?!?!?!? "I'm seeing a lawyer in the morning!" kind of price. You could wind up single but at least you would have a Jerico. :tongue1:

What things cost is in the eye of the beholder, For me and you that is a lot of money. For some suit that makes $500,000 a year for coming up with Budweiser commercials, it probably isn't as costly to him. :)

LOL good point. On speed TV I was watching a classic car auction and this one guy bought 3 really rare cars in a row... he won 1st, then the 2nd, then the 3rd! It was around 800,000 dollars he spent in about maybe 20 minutes:confused: I would hate to have that much money... I would end up buying things I would hardly use.
Anyways, back to the topic:grin:
