I would have to try very hard to roll my truck with 9" lift and 38.5's in the mud here in the great flatland of Illinois. Some trucks are built for a purpose other than rocks and trails. Some people just like to look cool...

where's Tim to comment on this one?

I would go with a strait 8" lift, install it, and if it isn't level add a pair of zero rates to the sagging end.

I managed to do it. It wasn't that difficult either. That's the day I learned my lesson and ever since then I've been in some pretty hairy sh!t and haven't rolled my rig yet, including almost rolling it forwards end over end.

That's exactly what I was running too...9" and 38.5s.

I have an 82 K20 with 8" Superlifts up front and ORD Shackle/4" Block in the rear. 35's rubbed up front until I got new springs(warranty issues) and an ORU 1 inch lift shackle. My rear end still sits 1.5 inches higher. I wish I would have gone with 10" springs up front. I think that on trucks 3/4's at least, we should shoot for front lifts that are 2" higher than the rear to get it to sit level. You might run into issues with the front cv driveline not going to a high enough angle as well as drivelines needing to be lengthened. I would lower the rear 1" but that would mean another new driveshaft. I will eventually run 36-38" tires, my rims are 17x10 eagles. Hope this helps. Your plan sounds cool to me. I think that they look about perfect at that height.
