Ever hear of a light duty 4 speed manual transmission in 1990 K5? I am looking at a complete 1990 K5 for parts and the guy is telling me it came with a hydro clutch and a light duty transmission. He is calling it a SM355 or something like that.

I'm not sure what a 1990 would have for a "light duty" manual tranny..I thought 4x4s only came with SM465's or NV 3500 and NV4500's?..
I have seen a few diesel 4x4 pickup trucks with a A-833 overdrive 4 spd Mopar tranny, the same ones used in 70's Volare's and B-100 dodge vans..

I know a guy who bought an '81 C-10 2wd from a auction ,it was a telephone company truck,it came factory with a 250 straight six and a 5 speed manual tranny--looked to me like the same ones a 70's Monza used, that had the shifter built into the tail shaft...:eek1:..the build sheet under the seat we found confirmed it was the original tranny too...

I was surprised to see they used that tranny,I warned the guy not to go doing any roll backs or burnouts with it!...he ended up swapping a TH350 in it after awhile,so his wife could drive it..

Might be called an sm833, I'm not certain. It was originally used in mopar cars and 1/2 ton 2wd.

They are rare transmissions. Usually 2wd. I have seen one 4x4 chevy on Craigslist with that trans.

I never heard of the light duty's being used that late. I thought they were only in the early 1980s.

Diesel4me is right, it was called an a-833 in mopars.

The gears are 1-2-3-OD

I have one in a slant 6 dodge pickup. Behind the slant 6 it sucks. The engine has no power, which makes the wide gear spread not fun.

The NV are 5 speeds though, right?

I'm failry sure they are 5 speeds...but I'm not well schooled on anything newer than the old square bodies, after 1988 when GM changed the body style,I haven't had much oppertunity to work on those or owned one yet...(dont really want one either!)...

I bet its hell to find a T-case adapter for the A-833 Mopar tranny--probably GM only sold a few hundred 4x4 trucks with that tranny --the two I saw were 1982 pickups with 6.2's,and one of them I wanted to buy badly--soon as I saw it in the boneyard,I told the counter guy to hold it for a half hour till I could get the 500 bucks they wanted for it...when I returned the moron running the loader had already crushed the cab with the forks, and was about to stuff it in the crusher..felt like caving in his skull!..

I have never seen another 80's truck with that "unitized" 5 speed either..must have been a rare option for fleet trucks with 250 sixes or something..

Here is what I know. It is mated to a 241, hydro clutch and he calls it light duty.

I did find some articles on the 883 and I think we are headed towards the right path. Pretty interesting actual, very similar gearing as the 700R4 and I would be able to bolt the SM465 into the bell housing.

It may not be too difficult to find a adapter for it, I remember finding a t-case adapter for a muncie m-21.

Is a M-21 a 3 speed or a 4 spd?..I know an M-22 is a 4 speed...memory is fading as I age...cant remember everything!..

It might have been an Advance Adapters unit,I do recall them having a custom adapter that would allow a Muncie 4 speed to be used in a 4x4 ...came close to buying one when I had a 72 K5 and was tiring of the poor gear ratio spacing..

I dont think GM made any factory, unless they put 3 speed Muncie's in 4x4's in the late 60's and early 70's,I know they used some with Dana 20 T-cases around 1968-71 with sixes and 307's...

I'd like to see the info on the A-833 if possible, just for some interesting reading..

Hmm,well,a 4 speed SM420 is what GM had before the SM465 ,they had a lower first gear than even a SM465 did--they used them from the 40's to the 60's as far as I know,a lot of old busses and C-60's had them,as well as smaller trucks 1/2 to 1 tons..

Someone must have swapped that in there,GM did not use them factory after the late 60's far as I know..

Pretty sure the 465 and 700 were the only trans offered that late. That's without checking out Dremu's brochure page, but I'm quite confident in that statement.

The guy doesn't know what he has is what it sounds like. I've seen exactly one light duty manual trans in ANY of these trucks, and it was an early 80's, with a diesel in front of it.

We'll I am buying the truck, so I should know soon. Did the 465 use a hydraulic clutch in '90?

Ok, it is definitely not a A883. It is a top loader. To me, unless someone tells me otherwise, it is a SM465. It has PTO covers on both sides and it is ribbed. Drain on the side and in the adapter side.

If that is the case, I didn't realize they point SM 465 with hydraulic clutches in them, but I have been out of the manual transmission game for a while.

So, the question is can I use the hydraulic assembly to bolt on a 5.3 bell that would mate to a 5.3? I understand I need a different flywheel but would the rest work?

one bolt hole will be unused, but yes, your hydro bell will fit with the correct flywheel. SSyork is installing an nv4500 on his 5.3 right now.

Yes all SM465's were hydro clutch after 1985. Sounds like what you have. That is a heavy duty transmission.

I have a 465 buried in my parts shed. Been so long I forgot what the hell it looks like.
