I have a problem with my front drive shaft coming apart. The only time it comes apart is if I am at full droop on both sides (i.e. wheelie). I think I can cure my problem with a limiting strap but I don't want to limit my articulation in the front so I was thinking I could run the strap in the middle from the engine crossmember to the axle which would allow my axle to fully flex either side but not both sides at once. Any suggestions/ideas/comments?

Why wouldn't you do it? I can't put a longer driveshaft in. The slip joint that is in it is the biggest that the local driveshaft maker can get. It has alot of slip but when I get both front wheels off the ground my axle swings way down and there just isn't enough slip for this one situation. People use limiting straps all the time on either side but I don't see why one in the middle wouldn't work. If I have to I will put one on each side but in order to limit the axle travel enough to keep the driveshaft together I will have to give up some flex.

There's nothing wrong with a center limiting strap, but im confused how that will save the front shaft from pulling apart. When the pass side droops, the d-shaft is going to pull out so a center limit strap wont do you any good. It may be time for a square d-shaft or give Tom Woods or High Angle driveline a call

I have the perfect solution. Gimme some of your droop and I will give you some of my non-droop. Things will balance out and we will both be happy!!!!

Oh wait. nevermind.

Yeah I know, go away newb!

Maybe he should see a Doctor if he's got the droop. Actually I would think that a single limiting strap going from the cross member, or build your own, going down to a custom bracket off the top 4-5 bolts off the diff cover would actually work very well. You wont limit your drivers side droop at all and only limit the pass side a little on full droop. Just my $.02

Exactly.

The front driveshaft is on the RH side of the vehivule so a center limit strap will still leave you a good enough drop for the d shaft to come apart again, why not limit the RH side only

Big has a point though, where you locate it is key. It changes the vector of force. But understand that it is less and less effective the furher you get away from the the optimal point. There is a solution to this and I am sure the better minds here in CK5 can figure it out. I am just jealous that there is THAT much droop in the suspension. My Blazer is still a tight one. I must be hung like a buck gerbil so I am still jealous of the problem lol

Yeah now that you guys mention it, I think if I went off of the left side of the diff cover straight up then that would prolly work. Now how the hell do I mount the strap?

BTW: troutbum you are funny! I read your first post a busted up laughing! Thanks for putting me in a bit of a good mood for the moment!

Maybe two straps, one from each framerail that connect at a central spot on the axle?? :dunno:

Thats a great idea

I AM HAVING A SIMILAR PROLEM WITH MY TRUCK, AND I WANTED TO PUT A SINGLE LIMIT STRAP RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. I HAVE ONE CHAIN ON EITHER SIDE THOUGH, BUT I DIDN'T BUILD IT. I GUESS THE SINGLE ONE WOULDN'T WORK AS WELL:confused: HERE IS A PICTURE OF MINE...

Did this on a Jeep in competion one time.Worked well.It was just a bandaid.Needed a longer slip driveshaft. If you don't mind losing a little drop then go for it.

Something like this would work well. It is DIY4X hydro ram mount but you could figure out the correct bolt pattern and use it at the top of the pumpkin. Or find a spring plate like leadfoot has a just turn it 180* and put a strap mount on the sway bar mount and go from there.

Forgot the PIC.

Easiest way: get a pair of new spring plates

Then weld a tab to each one so you can bolt the strap to it and bolt the other end to the frame

The axle tube should be fine. Might have a harder time with the pumpkin as far as getting a stronger weld.

A center limit strap is fine.

Standard thing to do with a coilspring suspension system.

You can have a short center strap and not limit the articulation since in theory the axle pivots around the center point to articulate.

Weld a good tab to the axle housing and something with some size on the chassis(Cross member should work with a little gusseting)

Or put a limit strap on both sides that keeps the travel down to a manageable level.

i just made a square front driveshaft for less then 20 bucks, is the shizzel more travel then ill ever need and so easy to do, way stronger then stock
