Okay, stupid question time. What is a "linear" and what is it for?

It's basically an amplifier. Boost's outgoing/receiving power by however much it is rated for. Allows one to talk great distances. I used to have a Palomar 350 hooked up to my Uniden PC76. One time I was just outside of Phoenix and talked to someone on a sugar plantation in Guatemala...blew my mind.

there is a Solar cycle , and it is roughly 22 years , with the peak where you transmit far and wide with low power coming every 11 years ............................. which is about the time we have CB popularity thing . Never fails .

So would a 400 watt Dominator linear be worth getting just to increase the range of the cb?

Not really , waste of money . If the amp doesn't feel heavy in your hands , its probably made crappy and closer to 50 watts if that . And their will be no filtering , so your gonna piss everyone around you off when you interfere with their TV's and phones . Those are the reasons they are illegal to use on CB .
Not to mention , that it doesn't matter if you have 4 watts or 400 watts when the band isn't open for long distances , remember MOTHER NATURE , determines when your able to talk far .
An amp maybe gets you around the metropolitan area you live in , most of the time
Spend your money on a good antenna and forget the amps .

what he is saying is true but you can still achieve atleast 15-20 miles with a 250 watt linear. i have two knock off palimar's 250 and 225 watt linear ,burnt the pills in the 250 (still works but a little weaker). i can get out about 25-35 miles with mine and my gallaxy 959(peaked and tuned). a linear does you no good though if the ones you are talking to at that distance dont have one because you will not be able to hear them. i have been told by coworkers that they can hear me from up to 40 miles away,and ive talked to a friend of mine upto 40 miles away.me on the 250 and him on the 225 with no problem. so how many of your friends have linears will determin if it is worth it.most trail rigs do not need to talk over 3 miles ,you can achive this up to 6 or 7 miles with a good cobra 29ltd classic peak and tuned!!!!!!!!
