How does this differ from a Wankel engine or is it an updated version of one?

Looks like the basic concept is very similar, but as I noted in the OP, it appears not to have the wipers/seals like the Wankel has. This was one of the bigger, if not biggest problems the Wankel had. The rotor is more oval, not triangular like the Wankel. Wipers don't appear to be used, but it's still going to need some type of seal on the sides of the rotor.

I like the compact form factor. As KTM pointed out, it must be externally air cooled.
 
The biggest problem w/ the Wenkel is they're THIRSTY and they're dirty. They'd never make it through modern CAFE standards or emissions.
 
Looks like it works more like a two stroke... maybe it takes a gas/oil mix... something has to seal the combustion chamber ??
