Recently I bought a truck with a rebuilt motor and it didnt run all too well. hard to start, very low power and hardly any vaccum. I talked to several people and some of the local mechanics told me it was a bad cam. so I purchased a comp 268h and a set of lifters and set out to install it. turns out the cam was good, timing gears werent lined up. it was so bad out that Im suprised it ran at all. most of my pushrods were bent so I grabbed a set of pushrods and stuck it all together.
talk about an amazing difference. the truck had a huge boost in power and vaccum and come to find out it only had 4 cylinders firing. so I doubled my power with only four good cylinders. last night I pulled my heads and found my next problem. 3 bent valves and one that was cracked. also used two different casting numbers on the heads.
tonight I will be picking up another set of good heads with the same casting numbers and hopefully have it all back together and running by friday. I cant wait to see the power increase when I get the other cylinders firing. and the moral to my story, make sure your timing gears are lined up when you put the motor together and it is a good idea to break down a motor and check its condition even if its been built recently.
