Listen to this, Trans is not happy

I know you mention no cracks in the flexplate but it sure sounds like it, (maybe in an area you cant see between the crank bolts?) that or the starter bendix could be contacting/hitting the ring gear. It might also be the torque converter has a fin that has come loose and is banging around. The trans wouldn't make a noise like that unless it was eating itself up in the pump and there would be lots of metal generated by that action' and rapid trans failure.

I would bet it's the flex plate. That sounded just like mine did and I lost 2 of them last season. Reason I lost them was due to a (brand new) bad torque converter. Bought matching TCI converter and flex plate and has been solid for almost a year now. The flex plate broke between the bolts and was very hard to see.

jinx

I checked it good dude I can get an excellent look at it and the bolt circle and I found no evidence of cracking.. If it's cracked I'll be shocked

So It wasn't the flex plate, I sent the trans off with my tranny guy and he gave the converter to the mfr and they said it was overheating? What I don't understand is how a stock trans could live in the exact same environment for 129k miles???? same tire size everything is identical.. soo now I get to buy the f#$%ng largest cooler I can fit under there and put a gauge so I can monitor the temp.. All this crap and I haven't even had a chance to tow with it yet..

Yes I'm a little fired up!
I don't have the funds to mess with this crap.. I paid a lot of money for this to be right not to get screwed..

A converter can overheat easily if the converter clutch is not applying or slipping. Make sure you are getting good TCC engagement, ask your builder to remove the check ball capsule in the end of the input shaft. This capsule has an orifice designed to control application rate, removing it will help application and will not be harsh in your truck.

That's a nice cooler, run the fluid through the radiator first, then through the cooler then back to the trans. The top fitting on the trans case is the return line. When you mount the cooler keep an air gap between it and the radiator or condenser. I would not use those push through mounts that the manufacturer supplies, use the holes in the cooler tabs and/or fab some small brackets for at least a three point mount. Keep the rubber lines away from any sharp edges they can rub against. You can insulate them where needed with some heater hose and zip ties.

Just for everyones information Autozone sells reboxed hayden coolers.. I checked this model and its actually very small from what I expected. My k5 has a 11x9.5x1.5 so its much thicker compared to this cooler I posted a link for. so I either need to track down a factory gm cooler or buy a much larger one.

The cooler you posted, run in series with the radiator, should be all the cooler you would ever need. That's the same one I run on my Suburban and it does the job well.

Well according to this guy,(not my trans guy anymore) he thinks it need to be larger. He brought me an oem GM external cooler, I'll run that and a gauge for now. And I'll bypass the in radiator cooler for now just to be sure that it's not clogged or has some obstruction causing fluid flow issues. As long as my drive home goes well I'll order that same one I posted and run two just for extra insurance so I do not ever have to worry as it gets 115+ around here sometimes.

I actually have a small fan I could mount.. I may put that on a switch. I'll try and take pics of the cooler install.

Greg he did not remove that checkball in the turbine shaft.. I'm going to be installing this trans this morning., should I go ahead and remove it?
I know he said he installed a bigger .500 boost valve, corvette servo some kind of shiftkit brand I am unaware of, it had a heavy duty converter and good clutches, better sunshell etc.. I a, reading this is normal practice on hd units..

Considering that it took almost 20 miles in 50 degree temps to get past 150 and this pic is at top of my hill from maintaining 60-65 in overdrive I'd say this cooler is more than sufficient for what I need. The truck also drives much better and is much smoother than before.. Very happy camper over here.
