I just replaced a brake fitting above my rear axle and my brake light came on. I did not bleed the lines yet, but wanted to find the valve too....

Was it wierd that when I removed the fitting from the block above the axle that no brake fluid came out? (im referring to the block where the line off the frame comes in, and splits out to each rear wheel).

The valve is located on the crossmember in front of the engine. If you follow the brake lines you will find it. If you had a leak, the valve should have closed off that part of the system. Which would explain why you didn't have any fluid back there.

hmm interesting. how do I reset it? is it a button or do i need a tool?

There is a button on it...I'll see if I can find a picture.

The button is under the boot. Sometimes they are seiezed. I have seen a tool that bolts to the valve. It holds the button down for bleeding.

i did not know the proportion valve had a reset button if rear leaks..i've driven trucks w/o rear brakes before after rebuilding brake cylinders then, unless it will reset itself w/pressure!

good info!

On my 85 Suburban My rear brakes haven't worked in almost 2 years. I have been exploring things for awhile. After reading this post, I tried some of the stuff. But I still can't get the rear brakes to work.
I tried the reset button on the side of the valve earlier today.
I tried messing with the Load compensator as well.
Any suggestions?

load valves can freeze up .

also some older propotion valves get gummed up .

and I have also seen 1/2 of the master go inop .

bypass the load valve . was a crappy design anyway .

then if no fluid pump and hold brakes and crack the line open at the master on the front line . craking the line open will so if its building pressure from the master or not to even get down the rest of the way .

I would not touch the proportioning valve button ,every time I have tried messing with one I ended up putting another valve on,maybe its my crappy luck, but usually that pin dont need to be monkeyed with,it'll re-set itself if its working right by cracking the lines that may have air in them while applying the brake pedal..some valves the pin needs to be held OUT ,others you push in on it --take the gamble if you dare..

On the 73 to 87 trucks the PV is located on the front crossmember, down near the P/S pump..

The rear wheel cylinders can seize up pretty quickly if the vehicle sat idle for awhile..I'd ditch the poad sensor valve too,and use your brain to avoid having the rear wheels lock up..those things suck, might have worked for a year or two when new,and I bet many accidents could have been avoided if they didn't prevent the rear brakes from being fully operational..
