Sweetk30 came over today to help install my new lock right (2620LR - Dana 60). It didn't exactly goes as planned, here's a quick run down:

1) pulled the front diff cover and realized that I didn't have any gear lube in it :doah: I've only run it through the woods a few times (never on the road) and really haven't pushed it so damage is minimal... shim behind two spiders were broken and little sign on the teeth (my own dang fault, note to everyone make a list so you don't forget simple items like this while building)

2) roll pin holding center in was less than cooperative... after "modifying" a punch, we were able to drive it through with a mini-sledge :eek1:.

3) ground one tooth down on the ring gear (roughly 0.020") and the center pin slipped out

3) spider gears wouldn't drop out :dunno:, just a hair too tight, so we ended up having to pull one of the spicer lockouts for a little more shaft end play and they fell right out (axle stub shaft makes contact to plastic part of dial on mine).

4) started installing the lock-right and found that there was just not enough gap to fit the other half of the locker in the carrier  We pulled both lockouts off and still didn't have enough shaft opening to get it in.

5) frustrated and trying to keep the peace with the wife, we buttoned it up for the night and now I'm reflecting over a beer.... or two (ok maybe more than two but heck it's Saturday)

Sooooo this is where we ended up! I've heard over and over that this should be a 1-2 hr. install and we spent a good 3-4 hours getting it to the point that it's currently at.

Tomorrow, we're going to pull the driver's side (non-ring gear side) hub down to the spindle in order to pull the axle out a little (like I really only need another 20 thousands and it would fall together). Unless, someone can give me a clue on what we're missing! I'm feeling like I must have the only Dana 60 with all tolerances at max material condition.

I'll work on some pics tomorrow, I know every likes their pictures (me included)!

then i havent seen a set of gears not wana drop out before. then we even used a big pry bar to try and pry the shafts out to the wheels to give use the extra room. but no luck.

well i will bring some extra tools and we will get it done.

and i will make sure doofy ad's some diff oil this time. :thumb:

First thing I thought was they are trying to drive the pin out the wrong direction... They only go in and out oneway... But, sweetk30 has been around long enough to have known that...

actualy we found that out later. :doah:

i my self have never had to or need to pop the pin out on the 60.

so big learning curve. :haha:

i am not a know it all. just a smart a$$ :thumb:

Pin isn't the issue, it's getting the two halves in with the clearance of the axle shafts. We tried installing it without tearing the axle apart as described here:

i went back and checked the pics.

look at pic #9 i think the orignal poster forgot to mention he removed the outer parts and slid the shafts out.

we didnt have flush shafts with the first half of the lockright like he did in the pics.

i call bs after rereading this thread.

I had to disassemble the driver side to move the axle out also. Pin was a bitch too and I knew which direction to hit it.

I installed mine without pulling axles... Had a b!tch of a time at first, then I found some info somewheres on the innerweb and it went in like butter...

Trying to remember what the trick was, it's been awhile... If I can find it again I'll post a link...

I've pulled the lock right out shortly after and welded it... I'm full hydro and didn't really need a locker, so I traded it for something...

Well when I installed mine, I just pulled the shafts out, it went in quick.
I did front and rear in under 2 hours.
Taking one out is a different matter, it involved a lot of swearing and then got some brake cleaner and some air, and was able to get them out.

Lock right installed successfully (just pulled the driver's side axle out a hair and it all dropped in)! I then quickly proceeded to try out the the "true" 4 wheel drive (detroit in rear, lock right in front) and high centered myself on a snowbank :doah:

System works great, played in snow a little more and have zero complaints!

Thanks again Sweetk30 for the help! :waytogo:
