I looking to put a locker in the front of my truck. I can't afford a detroit, and i also don't want to set the gears again. although it wouldn't be a huge deal. I have heard that the lockrite for the 60 is actually pretty tough. Has anybody else heard this or actually have one in their's? My truck doesn't have a ton of power but does have a doubler and 42's.
I also heard that if you break an axleshaft or wheel joint with a detroit that you have a good chance of breaking the locker.:doah:

I was thinking of putting one in mine too. With it being my only DD now and the fact that I don't have access to a press now I was thinking lockright because I could do it in a weekend without having to press any bearings.

There is mixed reviews about lockrights in D60's. I know 2 people personally who ran/run them. Baddog ran on with his 42's & doubler and he ended up breaking it in Moab a few years ago. az-k5 runs on in his 40" MTR & doubler K5 and has beat the hell out of it for 3 seasons with no problems.

With 37's I wouldn't hesitate to run a lockright in a D60, hell I run a lockright with my 37" MTR's and a 10 bolt. With 42's you are more of a borderline. It might last but it has a better chance at going boom.

If you can't afford a Detroit then a Lockright is a gamble you will probably win for awhile. If you are breaking shafts you have just as good a chance at breaking a Lockright or a Detroit.

For what it is worth I have been running a lockright in my 10 bolt for 5 years. I bougth the whole axle used from a local wheeler who had 1 season on it. 3 of those years were heavy use on 35" tires and 1 year of heavy use on 37" tires. I have broken 3 shafts and not destroyed the locker yet. I am wondering if my locker was damaged on my last trail run as it is not disengaging properly anymore but for 5 years of use I can't complain. Its a $300 locker that I have been beating on for 5 years with no problems. Money well spent.

P.S. Matt (az-k5) has broken 2 stubshafts with his lockright. One stock 30 spliner, 1 alloy 30 spliner.

I was in your position not enough cash for a Full detroit. So I bought the lockright I'm on year 2 with it and have done some hard trails. I have nothing bad to say about the locker.

Did AZ-K5 do the install on his? I know some can be installed without removing the carrier from the truck but on my bro's toyo we had to pull the carrier to pull the ring gear. Just was wondering if you had to pull the ring gear on the 60. not having to pull it would be a lot nicer.

I don't remember but I don't think he had to pull the carrier out of the axle to install the lockright. I am not 100% on that though.

I ran one in a 60 with 560 hp and 38tsl's and 4.10 gears with no probs. Lots of mud and heavy pedal, but not much crawling. I do believe we pulled the ring gear to do the install. Never had a problem in 2 years of idiot footing it in the mud though!

I know folks who have killed several L/R's in D60's and a few that swear by them . My opinion is that they are not for the person that wants a higher level of durability . Assuming that the internals hold up under abuse for a season or two the single design pinion shaft is eventually going to kill the stock carrier . Four pinion open carriers were offered by the O.E.M.'s for a reason - the single pinion shaft doesn't always cut it under hard use ......

What about a spool? anybody have one of those in the front? I would try one if i could find a mini for the 60.

A full spool is the stoutest set up for sure but it ain't no fun in a front axle !

I am not aware of any company offering a mini-sppool for a D60 but the age old saying for a mini-spool is that they are only good for breaking other parts - and that part is usually the carrier ( for the same reason of the L/R ).

I am not saying that a L/R is a bad choice BUT I am saying they are not for everyone. Most hardcore folks wheel a bit differently and some folks don't seem to cross over the abuse line as often as others and have good sucess with lesser parts .

I'm running a Lockright in my front D60 W/4:56's
Running 38.5X14.50X16.5 TSL SX's
No complaints & I didn't have to remove the carrier or the ring gear to install it.

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure thats at least what I'm gonna get. If I ever do break it it will just be a sign that I need something stronger but I won't be going any bigger than 37's for a couple of years. Thanks again guys.

I run a LockRite in my Front D60 on my K30. I have 40's, an SM465, and a 3:1 lomax kit in my 205, and it has held up very well. I run hard trails, but I am not an extremely abusive driver (not light, either, but I am not super over the top like some folks). It has held up fine for over two years, and in case anything bad happens, I just keep an entire spare unit in my tool box in the truck.

I always figured I'd blow up the Lock Rite, and I'd move to an ARB, but it has never happened. :)

I've ran a L/R in my front D60 for the last 4 years with 38's. Granted it has an auto and relatively low power 6.2 diesel, and I don't drive completely crazy, but I have broken 2 30-spline stock stubs, twisted a 3rd, and broke a necked-down stock inner shaft. So far no issues with the L/R.

A buddy of mine ran a L/R in the D60 of his Ford for several years with 38's and a 460 and beat on it quite a bit, and eventually broke it after going to 42's.

Do You Have To Pull The Shafts Out? Or Can You Slide The Outer Pieces On With The Shafts When They Are Still In The Carrier?
