I came across a used Auburn limited slip for the rear of my Heep that I am considering. The guys upgrading and it's a year old, with 4.10 gears included. Good price and little use. It's for my Heep which is still used on the road, but has also become my part time trail rig since I parted out the Jimmy. Now I know a locker is the way to go for the best traction, but would it make sense to go with the LS in the rear if I plan a locker in the front? Also, any input on Auburn in general?

I have one in the back of my truck and love it driving on the street. It keeps both wheels spinning when going straight. But for offroad use it aint that great. Its just a step up from an open carrier. There ok offroad since they can handle a lot of torque differnce before they slip, but once one tire loses traction greatly or gets in the air its a no go.
I would say if it wernt in a heep but maybe 10 bolts you could get it to put in your front once you got a locker for the rear. But to me I thinks its a waste of money for a rear trail rig, but its your call.

I have an Auburn in the front and an Eaton in the rear.
The Eaton works well, they're rebuildable and you can put 800psi clutch packs/springs in them making them darn near a locker.

The Auburn uses cone clutches and requires the wheels to be turning for the clutches to engage. If your stopped at a rock, and try to climb it, good chance the auburn wont lock up where the Eatons spring packs at least try to turn both wheels.

Im not a fan of the Auburn for off-road.

As said. Auburns are only fair off road. But they do have great street manners and they do work good if you drive around on the street in the snow.
With a locker in the front, you will need a streetable locker/LS in the back if you DD on the pavement. If you live where it snows/ice a lot. Offroad the front locker will get you thru most sitiuations.
I run a Gov-Bomb rear and Powertrax No slip locker in the front of my K5 and love the combo. The Gov-loc is great on the street where I need it. It has better manners than my old detroit in the snow. The gov-loc gives me plenty of traction in ice and snow in 2 WD so I dont have to use 4x4 unless the snow is deep or climbing a steep hill. The front locker takes the stress off the gov-loc in rough offroad situations.
I think running an AuburnLS and a front locker would give similar results.

I drove two Northern Michigan winters with my Ranger with a Powertrax NoSlip (Lock Right's newer brother) in it and then the last winter I drove more of it than I wanted to with Big Ugly and it's 20 year old Detroit.
Learn to drive a truck with a locker, pay attention, and don't drive like an ass and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the input. One reason I was contemplating it is because the Heep is still a dd for another year at least before it's retired from that duty and turned more into dedicated trail rig/weekend run around. The other reason is that it comes with 4.10's. I wouldn't put the gear sets in right away because of it being still mainly a DD, but at least when it is time to upgrade the front Dana 30, I'll already have the gear set for the rear. It is also only 80 bucks so I was thinking what the hell, at least it's better than I got right now and I can always spool it instead down the road if it become a trail only rig.
