A gov lock is a factory gm "locking" rear end. It uses a series of gears and weights to "lock" the rear end if a major difference in rpm is detected between the tires. A "limited slip" generally uses clutches. When a rpm difference is happening, it applies the clutches. Locking the two tires Together. But the force between the clutches isn't usually great enough to "lock" the tires together. A Detroit is a locking style rear end. It uses springs to apply pressure and lock the tires together using gears. It is far superior to the gov lock, and is most often the choice for four wheelers due to it's brute strength and reliability.

in the 10 bolt/12 bolt/14 semi floater the gov locker is vary weak design.

but in the 14full floater its designed a lot diffrent and much stronger than the ones listed above.

a gov loc is a open diff till a fly weight is activated when 1 wheel spins faster than the other. this locks in the clutch pack giving you a posi rear. then when you stop and are out of the nasty stuff that it was needed for it unlocks and goes back to open diff.

these are good for most people in on road driving or if you know how to use one off road. i prefer one in a dd for snow/light loose gravel conditions cause i know how it works and reacts.

the bad is when you just hold the foot to the floor and let it SLAM/BANG in and this blows up the guts inside the unit or cracks the carrier.

--------------------------------------------------

a detroit locker is locked all the time = power to both wheels same speeds. unless you are turning under light or no power then it will ratchet as a open diff would. super strong units and worth there money.

--------------------------------------------------

limited slip or posi rear is a set of clutch disks that drive both wheels same speed untill the turning forces on the tire over comb the clutch packs and let a wheel slip faster than the other. over time the clutches wear out and need to be rebuilt or on some whole unit replaced.

also limited slip tends to be a little lighter duty than a posi . but both are basicly the same.

--------------------------------------------------

for heavy duty in off road detroit or arb air locker whould be best . only benifit of a arb air locker is its open diff till you hit the air switch and then its locked up like a solid axle no slip/play/free whell of any tire .

hope this helps you. :thumb:

I know you didnt ask, but a major difference between a Detroit and a Loc-rite is the carrier. Detroit replaces the whole carrier unit and needs to be setup and adjusted. A Loc-Rite just replaces the spyder gears. It works but for hardcore wheeling a detroit is the way to go. For mall crawling or casual off roading like I do, the Loc-Rite works well

except on a 14ff rear then a detroit only replaces the side gears as its a 2 peice carrier.

pic #1 = detroit for 14ff
pic #2 = detroit in place of spiders with 1/2 the carrer off to show.

note the spring on the detroit . thats the 1 you see in the window of a open carrier if it has one inside. or if you see teeth then its open diff.
