Today I went to install a lockright in my front 60, I was planning on leaving the carrier in but after a few hard hits on the roll pin to pull the pinion shaft I broke the tip of my punch off inside the carrier! Not sure what the deal was but that roll pin was not budging, I thought a harder blow from the hammer would do it but now that I broke my punch I am not too sure how to proceed. Does the roll pin only go out the one way, left to right? Should I pull it and drill the roll pin out? I couldn't get the piece of my punch out. Any help would be great!

The roll pin only goes out one way, towards the driver's side in a GM D60. You'll need something long and slender (most punches won't work because they are tapered) to tap it out.

And the shaft you're trying to remove is called the "center pin", the pinion gear is completely different.

it goes "in" so you punch it through from the backside of the ring gear. i used an allen wrench to knock mine out.

Thanks for the replys. I'll find something tonight and keep on trying. I was hitting it the correct way, hopefully the piece of my punch that is in there doesn't lock up that pin.

We had trouble doing the same thing in the shop last week. Ended up pulling the carrier. just 4 more bolts and the tie rod end. was easy as pie.

d44's and d60's its always easier yanking the front carrier . And on some gearsets , you may as well remove the ring gear so you don't have to grind anything to put the center pin back in ( 3.73 and higher numerically ) :D
