I was having problems with my TC locking up and unlocking on my 91 burb... i put in a switch and relay to lock up when the button was pushed and unlock when i hit my brakes. things are working like i want except that when towing my 3500# travel trailer this weekend, i noticed a little shuddering when shifting down or up with the converter locked and under load. my question is, am i experiencing a worn clutch or am i overloading it and just need to ease off it more? seems to engage fine and doesnt slip once engaged if not under load during shifts or when im not towing...

I was under the impression the converter should be unlocked during shifts. Also, it should be unlocked pretty much all the time until a steady cruising speed is found. Towing in OD....some people say nah some say yah.

Fairly certain that the TCC should not be engaged between gears and generally only in OD.

Your best bet is to troubleshoot why the TCC is not being controlled properly and go back to the factory control system. What behavior prompted you to switch to the manual system?

the reason i modified it is that it wouldnt stay locked. it would only lock up under minimal throttle and when i would tow anything it would stay unlocked unless i was going down hill. i took it to a trans shop and they said it was a control problem, maybe the computer, so i decided to make it manual.

The converter should not be locked between shifts, it transfers a lot of harshness and too much torque to the input drum. You should not be towing in overdrive unless it is a very light load, but the trans will run cooler in overdrive with the clutch applied. If you continue to experience a shudder in lockup you may want to consider upgrading to a converter built with a better clutch and damper for the type of work you are subjecting it to.

under heavy loads you should be towing in direct drive (third gear). And the control circuit is supposed to unlock the TCC when under heavy load, acceleration, and between gear shifts. As k85 said previously, the TCC realy only engauges under steady state, Light load cruising.

It sounds to me like the system was working properly under automatic control.

If you want to tow in overdrive with the TCC engaged I would not leave it engaged between shift points. Should only be on when in OD. But, towing in OD is sketchy at best (just my opinion).

greg, do you have any reccomendations of such a TC with heavier duty clutch parts? any idea on price?

i dont think it was working properly...when i took it into the shop, they agreed there was a problem...as they could only get it to lock up when letting off the throttle, then barely putting it back on...then with ANY more throttle, it unlocks again.

i generally do tow in 3rd only...but on a long descent i'll put it in OD and save some gas...when i experience the shudder is when i approach the next hill and i downshift it back to 3rd as i get on the hill. I-15 here in Utah has a bunch of up and down...not much flat.
