Ive never seen one before, known thats where they got the 671 blowers from, but thats all.

Are they that bad? I am not a big diesel guy at all.

Quite possibly one of the most gutless diesel engines ever built. Don't waste your time! They work fine for stationary applications like generators or can be hooked up side by side on a transfer case (one turns left & the other right) to power bigger gens, pumps, etc but are very weak in a truck.
 
I know nothing about diesels but i can say that a Detroit 671 diesel weighs 2840lbs and is 855 CI and makes anywhere from 425-515hp @ 1800rpm and 1450-1650 ft/tq @ 1100rpm. The numbers might seem good but then factor in the extra 2275lbs of weight over a 350 and all of a sudden it's not that impressive anymore.
 
If we're comparing it to 350's I would think 1000ft/lbs+ more torque (than a healthy small block) would more than make up for an extra 2k pounds...
Then again I think you'd have bigger probelms to solve when talking about stuffing something that weighs almost 3,000 pounds into the front of a truck. :)
 
Think about what the poor leaf springs would be thinking when you stuff an engine that weighs 5 times as much as a 350 into that rig. How about tires, getting REALLY close to the weight limits if not exceeding them already as well.
 
I think you are confusing it with the 60 series the old 6-71 as pictured was good for about 280 horses, 650-810ft lb of torque and weighed about 2200# 6 cyl x 71 ci per cyl=426 cid In a semi truck when you came to big hill you downshifted 2 or more gears at a time to stay ahead of it. I'm no expert but I worked on alot of them in the oilfield back in the 80s.

lets buy it and put in 4x4high's blazer :D. it might work if you had rockwells and the springs that they use on the duece and a halfs
 
Sorry that's not a 6-71, that's a 6-53 Detroit. 671's are correctly labeled 6V-71, because they are V motors. The 71 means it has a blower, others that have a blower and a turbocharger are called 6V-92's. Or 8V, or 12V- 71 or 92. They are two stroke diesels that if tuned properly, can be very powerful motors in trucks. The 6-53 was an inline 2-stroke motor, but never came with a blower (impractical) only turbos. And by the looks of that pic, it doesn't have one. So basically, that motor is a good boat anchor.

I did make a mistake in my initial research and had quoted info on the 60 series and not the 71 series.

The engine in question does have a supercharger hanging on it and the 6-71 IS an inline engine not a V series engine. There is a 6V-71 engine as well which IS a V as designated by the V in the 6V-71. As someone else already had mentioned the 6-71 means that it is a 6 cylinder engine with 71ci per cylinder making it a 426 displacement.
