And i was wondering what to look for that would be not a good thing, like do the frames crack like the 4wd? and thoese types of things.

Thanks
Tom

Not much particular to that family of trucks really stands out - they're pretty solid trucks. I personally would aim for a 350ci engine versus a 305 (personal preference), but other than that I can't really think of anything. That, together with a TH350 transmission (or a manual) and you've got a pretty reliable package.

I've never heard of a 2WD frame cracking at the steering box.

Check the ball joints (but I'd check that on any truck).

My first truck was an '86 C-10. I traded it for a '71 C-10 in college.

well the truck has an olds 455 in it with a th400, it's in good shape, no rot so nothin elese really differes from the 4wd and 2wd?

Thanks
Tom

Ah, I couldn't tell from your first post that you had a particular truck you were looking at.

The Olds 455 is a torquey sumbitch - could be alot of fun  . The TH400 is, as you know, a good tranny. What rear end is in that truck? If it's the stock 10- or 12-bolt keep your foot out of it, or you may grenade it.

Look at it like this: the front end is solid on these trucks, and there's no transfer case (so no potential problems there), so there's less chance for stuff to go wrong. One other thing I thought of - I would see if it has a one- or two-piece driveshaft. The two-piece can be problematic, but you can replace it with a one-piece pretty easily.

i belive it's got a 10 bolt, what would be a replacement for it, and keep the 5 lug? BTW it's a shortbed

Lots of stuff really, but I wouldn't worry about replacing it.

If you are set on swapping it out, a 31 spline Ford 9" would be a good choice.
