Do you have the adapter? Transfer case? Round or figure 8 pattern? I have an extra long 32 spline input gear, but I fear you need much more. Might also try PM to MEK5 on here, he has all these parts, and is closer to you.

i have two other 465's with 205's on them. but the one in my k5 is a aluminum top short throw, so i want to keep it. so yes i got all the rest of the parts. i want to rebuilt a 205 and twin stick it before it goes in the truck any way so a input swap is not anything. (i had to do it to my 241 the 465 came with a driver drop)

Are your other two SM465's 10 or 32 spline tranny's? The figure 8 adapters are not the right length for use with the 32 spline output SM465 output shaft.skyyk5 said:

i'll check mine in the light tommorrow. but since the 32 is longer it does not bother me too much. i have a mill and lathe. or make an adaptor plate. or find the adaptor i need (if i don't have it). do you know off hand it is hollow (splined) down the whole input or not. i would think it is. i'm cutting down a 3/4 8ft bed pickup rear shalf. and my front needs alittle more length too. so the 205 foward more would be ok if it were to happen that way.
ORD sells a short 32 spline output shaft for the SM465 intended to put a 32 spine input into a NP203 using the rare factory adapter... I once looked into using that short shaft with the figure 8 adapter you had and a short 32 spline NP205 input and came up needing a 1" spacer plate for the shortest and strongest combo possible.
The easiest route would be using a factory adapter like I have with a round pattern case and long 32 spline input of course...
And just incase... to change an NP205 from 10 spline to 32 spline inputs you have to enlarge the input bore for a larger input bearing. Not a big deal if you have access to a machine shop though.
I have the 205 and adapter seperated off of the SM465 and can check on the spline length but I don't think its splined the full length of the shaft.

You're correct Kenny, the 465 output shaft is not splined the full length, but only about 2.5 inches. It is 8" long outside of the transmission case.
The LONG 32 spline 205 input gear is not splined the full depth, but only the outermost 2.25 inches.
The SHORT 32 spline 205 input is splined the full depth.
If I remember correctly, the 465/205 figure eight adapter is 8" long, and the 465/205 round adapter is 10"long.
The 465 can be adapted to the round 205 using the common 465/208/241 adapter(8.5" long), but must use the SHORT 32 spline 205 input, and must use cable type shifter, as the adapter has no provision for a shifter.

edit: You are absolutely correct about using the factory later model setup being easiest; it is also the strongest.
When GM went to the short adapter, the regular occurence of broken adpter feet disappeared, as did the premature failure of 10 spline couplers.

thanks that would be helpful if you have the time. but i'll also find out when the new input shaft comes. i have the short adaptors. but my mind goes off on ways to build things sometimes, and i have a couple new ideas for the long shalf. so it will be nice to have it around. thank you for all the help. worse case is i swap in a 10 spline with t-case for now and put my alum. top on it. but i'm going to start a new k5 as soon as i get a bare frame. thanks again
