There used to be a write up on fitting an expanded metal (steel mesh) grill on one of the older rigs. I've searched around but can't find it anywhere. Anyone have this still or know where to find it. I remember the guy had fit four lights behind the grill too. Looked pretty good. Any help appreciated. Thanks Jason.

Just to let you know, I also remember said thread. Just wanted to let you know you weren't loco ;)

You can see from my pic that I've done it on my '89 and it was super easy. I'm getting a '76 this weekend and wanted to see again how it looked like that. The older ones take a bit more effort because of the hood release.

fireplug, got any close up pics? I am VERY interested in attempting this, just don't know if I have the fabrication skills to pull it off and make it looks good.. The lights are ingenious... That truck in the Article looks MEAN.

I don't know the model years well. If your front end is like mine (fleet) or the quad headlight style, it is as easy as it gets. I didn't even have to weld!

I used the plywood and 2x4 form and bent the expanded metal around it.

Then I used those black trim screw with the large fixed washers (someone help me with the correct terminology) to mount it to the truck. Oh yeah I used some thick rubber washers behind the expanded metal to keep it from rattling.

If you constructed a decent welded frame and mounted it with tamper proof hardware it would be a really decent theft deterrent for accessory lighting.

If you still think pics are worthwhile let me know and I'll grab some.

Jason.

That's Depdog's truck. Not sure if he's still in the scene or not - he was an original CK5'er IIRC...

I would love to see all the pics I can get before I start. I emailed depdog, and asked him if he could take a few more closeups. I was thinking of the theft deterrent too...... if I could fab up some kinda locking door under the hood latch, that would be sweet; but I don't have to have that....... I would just really love to make one of those grills and put lights behind it. I wonder if lights would even fit since I have an AC evaporator (or whatever its called) and an ATF cooler (that's just factory, but I may add another one soon)...

Just a reminder, my truck doesn't have the hood release, so I just wrapped the expanded right over the front edge of the engine compartment. I'll get to the pics later this weekend. Jason.
