To the CK5 brotherhood,

Searched through the forums but seem to find too many results not specific to the question....

I have a bunch of exterior bolts that have turned silver or seem like soft/cheap materials. I have a new project but it came with silver stainless bolts, not black to match the powder coated hood vents.....

I'm trying to find bolts that will retain their black finish and will actually last...

What is the best finish? I've searched on fastener sites but am getting lost.
Any direction on a web site would be much appreciated.

Should I be looking I be looking for anodized , black oxide chromoly, stainless, or ????

Thx for the help and direction.

Thx, Stomis.

So you think that the black oxide is the way to go? I have some bolts that are rusted....I'd rather spend a few more dollars on the best quality and longest lasting.

Again, thx for the response. I'm checking the McMaster-Carr stuff.

How strong do the bolts need to be ? Back in my sport bike days we used to use a lot of anodized aluminum stuff to match fairing colors and what not. Black anodized aluminum should weather quite well and rust should not be an issue, but I don't think I would use them for anything "structural"

Thx, Stomis.

Mc Master stocks quality hardware. EVERYTHING will rust after long enough given enough time. Even the not super expensive stainless steel will get an orange hue to it and stainless cant be used structurally.

Aluminum is really asking for problems putting it into steel.

I honestly dont think you have any other option than black oxide. Not that I know of at least. I mean theirs black chrome but pfff cmon...

I have seen black zinc but seems size selection has been limited. I haven't searched for them either.

Man, around here even the powdercoated stuff will rust.

I find black oxide to rust almost as quick as raw steel. Zinc/Nickel hardware store stuff holds up much longer. The gold grade 8 doesn't do too bad. Are you talking about simple stuff like holding hood vents on or serious applications like suspension? What are you willing to spend? I would keep the stainless and paint it black or get the heads powder-coated.

Thx, all.

This is for hood vents. The hardware that came with is silver stainless but it's a black powder coated sheet ~ total of 30 bolts. Cut holes in the hood and looking to bolt in place. Even the hardware supplied with some vendors turns silver in 5 - 6 weeks.

ARP stainless and have them painted or powder coated. Sure their expensive but if you don't need alot that might work.

Our local hardware store has black chrome bolts they would be the ticket me thinks, they are spendy though
