Hi, I looked through the 8.1 swap resource thread and could not find this information, I also searched other forums and found this post, but it relates to a 5.3:

I'm having a very hard time finding what combination of stuff I need to marry an 8.1 to an sm465. I kind of expect the answer to be the same as a small block with a different flywheel, but i'd like to know for sure before going out and ordering parts.

Thanks!

EDIT: I have a mechanical clutch, if that makes a difference.

The 8.1 thread located at the top of the "the engine bay" forum should have all the part numbers you need, I know flywheel is on page one.

Ah yes, you're correct that the part number is there! I may actually have seen that, but is it the correct flywheel I need for the sm465? Forgive my naivety when it comes to chevy stuff, maybe there is only one flywheel for this engine and it's the one to use.

Wes thanks for the welcome! I'll post pics of this project in the appropriete general chat forum by and by.

The part you need to worry about fitting the transmission is the clutch not the fly wheel. The fly wheel has to match the motor and the clutch needs to have the correct spline count for the transmission.

Clutches are also based on size, so if you’re using a 168 tooth flywheel, you need to be looking at a eleven inch clutch with a Ten spline input

Ok, so does this mean I can use the flywheel meant for the 8.1 and the clutch/pressure plate meant for the sm465? What about the pilot bearing?

Keep reading. All those answers really are in the 8.1L thread. I dont have the part numbers in front of me but I ordered flywheel, pilot bearing etc right out of that thread.

Does the SM465 use the same clutch/pressure plate as the nv4500? If it does, that could be why i didn't find what i was looking for.

It looks like the same part numbers on Rockauto, and it's listing 12" clutch discs, i thought those didn't clear the bellhousing?
Just want to make sure I get the right stuff on the first try.
My current 350 has a 168 tooth flywheel, for what it's worth, not sure what clutch it has but i'd rather not take the truck apart before having a new engine to drop in.
