Got my DIY4X engine mounts today from another member. I have a blast cabinet so can clean them for primer, I always use etch primer 2 coats let dry least couple hours or more then paint.

Are there any steps you would do different?

High solids rattle can stuff is a big difference for the durability of the finish.
I don't know where to find it in a retail store. I get mine from my hardware supply vendor. It has some of the same odor as 'real' paint.
Other than that, it sounds like a good plan!

If you have the air to blast it why not just get a cheap $10 harbor freight gun and some real paint? This seems like an excellent project to practice on.

Can't do that at work and garage is to cluttered to do it in there and not stupid enough to do it in the drive way with wife's highlander there!

I also like the hammered paint. Seems to be alot tougher than the other stuff in rattle cans. On anything larger I would get a cheap gun and spray something out of big cans. Especially if you can add a bit of hardener like tractor paint. For some small engine mounts just use hammered, it's good stuff.
